Ruth, nurse
I’m an experienced former midwife, so I understand how much new information mums-to-be are taking on. I always encourage them to ask me as many questions as they need about absolutely anything, whether it’s antenatal care, labour, post-natal care or feeding questions. Once they’ve got all the information they usually feel much happier about making decisions.

My top tips
- Follow your instincts and don’t feel guilty about any decisions you make for them – they won’t hold it against you when they’re 18!
- The time between finding out you’re pregnant and your first midwife appointment can be an isolating time, but it’s a time when looking after yourself and sticking to a healthy diet is really important.
- Breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world, but remember you and your baby haven’t done this before, it takes time.
