Lisa, baby care advisor and mum - Cow & Gate
Having a new baby can be a tricky time. There are lots of skills new mums need to learn so they can care for their babies, but there are also lots of new emotions to contend with. That’s why I give mums plenty of tips to help make practical tasks less stressful, which in turn help them to relax and enjoy those precious early days with their baby.

My top tips
- While you’re in labour go with the flow and take everything as it comes – don’t put pressure on yourself.
- Once your baby’s born use Muslin squares to lay baby on and put over your shoulder. It saves loads of washing!
- With most baby queries there are no rights or wrongs – do what you feel is right for you and your baby.
About me
My partner was with me for the births of both of our children. It was great to have his support and he was so pleased and proud when they were born. His only complaint was that his hands hurt where I gripped them too hard!
The first week or so after your baby’s born, be prepared to feel very emotional - a bit like you’re on another planet. When your feelings calm down you can still expect it to take a bit of time to get used to your new routine, so don’t be too hard on yourself.
