Fae, baby care advisor and mum - Cow & Gate
I’m a trained nursery nurse with children aged 3 months to 4 years, as well as a Cow & Gate baby care advisor, which means I’ve helped lots of different mums and their babies. It’s very common to speak to new mums who are trying to do everything at once. I advise them to just slow things down and take it one day at a time – it’s much healthier for them and their baby.

My top tips
- Do not be afraid to tell people not to come round for the first few weeks while you settle back at home. It’s understandable that friends want to come and see you, but you need time to adjust so let them know.
- When weaning try to offer lots of variety and fruit and veg. Give babies lots of opportunity to feed themselves either with finger food or using a spoon. And don’t worry about the mess, it can be cleaned up and a mucky baby is a great excuse to take funny photos!
- As babies turn into toddlers, they really start to show their personality and will begin to exert some sort of independence. Encourage them to try things on their own, but also make sure they remember who’s boss! Prepare yourself for tantrums and whenever possible, walk away and let them get on with it, they soon get tired of crying to themselves.
About me
I really enjoyed every moment of being pregnant. When he began moving I spent many an evening poking at my growing bump waiting for him to respond with a poke or kick back at me!
Although I’ve been lucky enough to have an easy time with my own son, my job as a nursery nurse means I’ve been able to successfully help lots of mums and babies with all sorts of feeding and sleeping problems.
