hiya, my story begins when i found out i was 7 weeks pregnant, i had really bad morning sickness for about 5 months but i loved being pregnant and watching my bump grow. All the antenatal groups where fully booked up in my area my due date was 3rd feb and all they could offer me was a week after that!!i was terrified about the idea of the birth and decided to get any drugs going(i cant cope very well with pain!)my husband agreed as he knows how soft i am and think he was dreading the birth too. Every 2 week appointment i had with my midwife i asked could i do a birth plan but she said it was to soon and as this was was my first baby i would prob go over and be induced. Well one morning when i was 37 weeks my waters broke, i just thought it would be a big gush and then stop oh no it just kept coming out after a frantic call to the hubby to get home from work i went to the hospital. there i was checked and was told the baby wasnt ready yet and they would induce me in 24 hours but to stay in hospital(at first they were going to send me home)whilst there they midwife took a swab, after and hour the pain was really bad and contractions really close together so i asked for some pain relief but they didnt believe i was in labour and wouldnt give me anything i asked them to check me and they wouldnt as they said it would set me back in the end i had to scream that the baby was coming and they shoved me in a side ward with a student midwife who was then trying to come up with a birth plan which at this point i didnt care i told her i wanted to push and then she checked me i saw her face go white and the panic in her voice, the baby was coming, bless her she did a fab job and i didnt even need stitches i didnt even get to see what the delievery suite looked like!!iall in all from getting there to the birth it took 3 hours.its funny how your natural instincts kick in and you know what to do i was so proud of myself and without no pain relief ,just sat there after watching my husband cuddle baby i had never felt so at peace and content in my life ,my baby girl was born weighing 7lb 3 oz and had red hair like me, she was beautiful.
next part, i was told that after having a normal birth i could go home next day and i couldnt wait. the doctor did all the checks and i was packing when he came to see me to tell me the swab they took when i first went in came back that i was a carrier of group b strep and i might of passed it on to the baby. i had heard of it and had asked my midwife for the test when i was pregnant but was told it wasnt needed i didnt know you could pay 32 pound and be tested privately.anyway i had to stay in hospital and they put an iv line in jess hand which was horrible to watch them do and she had to be on antibiotics for 48 hours till her test results came back, my husband was so upset having to go home without us, it was the longest 48 hours of my life but when the midwife came and told me to get packing jess had the all clear i couldnt stop crying so was the midwife.there was 3 other women on the ward in the same boat as me so it isnt that rare next time i have a baby because they know im a carrier i will have to have antibiotics while im in labour. when i looked on the internet i read properly about gbs and we had a lucky escape some women that had even lost their babies or had other side effects i was really upset when i read about it i have wrote to my local mp for the routine testing of gbs to be available to all pregnant women.
the end of the story goes my jessica is 11 weeks old now and doing great i love being a mum my husband wants another baby but although you soon forget about the pain of child birth its still there i can remember crying going to the loo for a couple of weeks after!!its too soon yet i want to enjoy my time with jess first.
so thats the short version on the birth of my daughter thanks 4 reading x

I have had 5 children and found out I was GBS carrier with my 2nd. Where I live they stick a bright yellow sticker on your file saying "Group B Strep Carrier. Give Intravenous Antibiotics". If you know you're a GBS carrier, you shud make sure you go to hospital straight away if your waters break as baby is then at risk of picking up the infection. Make sure you mention GBS when you ring the hospital or they may fob you off. The other thing is to be aware of signs of infection. My 3rd baby was taken back in when he'd only been home about 12 hours because he was unresponsive and had a blank stare. So long as you're aware of the facts, it shouldn't cause a problem. Good luck & stay positive!

Hi, im a mum of 8 week old cady booke and also a carrier of gbs. I had the intra venus anti-biotics during the labour as well as fluids due to keytones in my urine. I had been in hospital due to a viral infection for 4 days before the birth and in slow labour for 2days. By the time the labour started properly i just wanted the baby here. It took me all day and in the end i had to be cut with the help of the vantouse. The drip in my hand was the least of my worries. They tested cady and she was ok so i say dont worry, youll be fine and its better to have the drip than a poorly baby. natalie

hi there, at the moment i'm 39+3 weeks pregnant and 2 weeks ago they found out i had a water infection...took some antibiotics for 5 days and it had gone away when i saw the midwife last week i was told i was also a GBP carrier, at the present moment i'm not even thinking or worriyng about labour, the way i look at it it's going to happen no matter how much i worry or not...The only thing that worries me is the GBP, i just want my baby to come out with no problems....cause if you read the leafleat that the midwife gives you, even althought she says:- don't worry cause thats the worst case scenario.....you still do!!! Well wish me luck cause i shouln't be far of the wonderfull labour experience....once this is my 1st child!!!

hi l am a group b sptep , l had a baby at 30 weeks in 1991 not knowing l had it, he was very poorly when born and breathing difficultys and all after ten weeks in scabu came home, and today is a healthy lad but has had his problems related to being born early. it was only when l had my little girl who is now 6 years old that l found out l was a carrier and thats why l had my son early. l have to have antibiotics every 4 weeks from 20 weeks just to make sure l don't go into labour, but you still have to have them in labour.when my daugher was born l laboured so quick thay didn;t belive me and told me not to make a fush after phoning my husband up to come back to the hospital he ran in and said are you takeing my wife down she needs her antibiotics thay just said oh in a minuate minuates later her head started to appear only to be told l couldn't have it up on the ward and got pushed into a wheelchair in a panic. l didn't get my antibiotics ans my daugher become ill up on the ward and had to go to the scbu had too lots of antibiotics and got told she may have blockage as keeps being sick which wasn't the case. my daughter has gobel development delay and is three years behind in school somethink that shouldn't of happened if l was given the care needed at that time she is fine and doing well. but had to keep her down a year at school and have statement to get her needs met. in saying that l went on to have to more health children making sure l got the wright care. THIS GOES OUT TO ALL MUMS PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN DON'T WORRY WHAT THAY SAY TO YOU YOU ARE PUTTING YOUR HEALTH AND THE BABYS IF YOU DON'T GET YOUR antibiotics .
