1st time mum and loving it....

Written on 05/04/2008 14:21:42 by Kez'n'Jess

My partner and I decided it was time to try for our first baby and 11 months later we finally fell pregnant. I hadnt expect it to take so long but have since realised that 11 months is completely normal and obviously, it CAN take a lot longer so we were very blessed.
At first, I loved being pregnant but towards the end, I started to struggle with extreme acid pains in my stomach and then my breathing which would often have me gasping for breath - this turned out to be low serum ferritin levels (your extra iron supplies) so I had to drink an iron supplement (which my midwife offered me advice on and told me how much to have each day etc).
When I finally felt my first contraction, it was such a relief that the waiting was finally over and I knew we would soon be meeting our baby. My fiance wanted a girl from the beginning - even when we were still only trying to get pregnant so I was convinced it would end up being a boy! We really didnt mind either way though; as long as they're healthy its all that matters!
I had 5 contractions on the wednesday morning 20 minutes apart and then they stopped all day. They started again on the wednesday night and continued every 20 minutes for 12 hours before stopping again! By this time, it was 9.30am Thursday. I had an appointment with the midwife that afternoon so my fiance stayed off work to take me to it and whilst we were in the waiting room, the contractions started again. She examined me and said 'You are indeed in labour. You need to go to the hospital immediately' so off we went.
We got there about 2pm on the Thursday afternoon and when I was examined, I was 2cm dialated!
The contractions started to become more spread out so the midwife did a sweep on me which made them very close together and very painful again. Eventually, they sent my fiance home to get some sleep and sent me up to the ward to have some pethedine and try and get some rest myself.
After about 2 hours on the ward trying to sleep, the contractions were just coming too fast and strong so they took me back to the delivery room and I was then in full blown labour so my partner was called back.

I can remember soaking in a nice bath and then everything seemed to move so fast. I ended up having an epidural as she was back to back so it was getting just too painful to go without. After they had given me the epidural, it all felt a lot easier to cope with.

In the end, I was taken to theatre and they delivered Jessica with forceps at 6.56pm on the Friday! My fiance was the one to look at the baby and tell me if we had a boy or a girl and burst into tears of happiness as he told me he had got the little girl he had dreamt of!

And she truly is a dream come true!!!!!!!!!!

This is such a nice story reminds me of the labour that i went through with contractions starting and stopping. Its true you forget all the pain when you see that bundle of joy at the end.

Aww, this is a lovely story - thanks for sharing! The end of it made me cry too!
I am also going to be a 1st time Mum (I have ages to go yet, end of April 09!!), and slightly worried about the labour...although people say it the best kind of pain as you get a baby at the end of it all. It's helpful reading about other Mums experiences as it helps it sink in that it's all going to be fine.
I wish you all well, and enjoy being a Mum - I know I am REALLY looking forward to it!
