Constipation in babies

Hi all,

I'm a first timer, but am looking for suggestions. My baby is 12 and half weeks old. up until this week has had regular dirty nappies, one - two a day usually, however this week, this has tailed off, Its now almost 3 days since hes been. Dr has advised cooled boiled water and the usual. Anyone any suggestions????

You could try small amount of pure orange/ apple juice in with cooled boiled water...The one that works for me is golden caster sugar and only the tinyest amount in cooled boiled water it takes about a couple of days but works a treat.

Hi Saraw!

I had the same problem with my little one, my mom suggested boiling prunes and offering her the resultant juice - it worked wonders!

my daughter also got constipation when she was a baby (now nearly 4) I used all methods that Jae suggested and yes they work, But there is one thing you can do to help them when they are strianing to go, its not nice but it helps them. Get petrolium jelly on your finger and as they are trying to go bend there legs ond let them push on your hand with there feet and with your other hand rub the jelly around ther [censored] as they are pushing and this helps . (sorry to be graphic) This advise was given to be by my health visitor and really works.
Hope this helps Tracy mum of soon to be #5 @ 23wks

hiya my daughter is now 19mths and has stuggled with constipation since she was about 3weeks old. we now knows she is allergic to dairy which was causing most of the problem but she still suffers. Apricots and prunes are the best thing (like pienkvoet said) or if the problem continues visit your doctor and ask for lactolose which will help baby go...its a lifesaver for my lil one.Its best not to leave it too late or the doc may tell you to use a sipository to help shift the old stools which isnt nice for you or baby!
hope this helps!

Pretty easy answer to this...breastfeed! You don't get constipated breastfed babies as pretty much all of what goes in is used.
It's not too late to try again. Surely this constipation tells you what is going in is not good for baby!

My 2 uyears old has suffered with constipation for the last 18 months and is still suffering with it now. I use to give her lactose but she got addicted to it, i found califig helps. I found out how she got constipated though, she had a fisher (small rip) on her bum hole, hence this was causing her pain when she went, hence she didn't really want to go. Because it was painful she holds it in until she has no choice, but then she splits herself again and i'm back to salt baths and a tensed up, screaming baby when she needs to go. I went to the doctor and he just gave her lactose, but after a while i got quite fed up of the screaming, took her back to the doctors, more lactose, one day i noticed blood in her passings so i took her up a&e, as like any mum i paniced thinking it could be somethink bad as bowel problems run in my husbands family. The lovely doc at a&e found the fisher and solved the why she didn't want to go riddle. He prescribed me some vasigil to rub a small amount over her area, this apparently slightly numbs the area and she tends to go better. I still have problems with her now due to it now being phsycological, as she thinks that every time she goes its gonna hurt, so she still holds it in till it hurts. Make sure when you do take them to the doctors they check that part as i might have saved myself a lot of painful experiences if the fisher had been noticed the first time i took her rather than 8 months later.

a piece of info for anyone who is breast feeding.... my daughter went every day for the first few weeks, then poo just stopped. After 4 days i had to ask, but the midwife i saw, very experienced (and old).... said, breast fed babies can go up to a week without passing....as long as there are plenty of wet nappies, the poo will come! She was right, some days i can have 3 dirty nappies then wait a week for the next one.... but oh boy, when it comes............. i know about it!

oooh another handy tip...................... just after i had sian, i had stitches and found it hard to go............. i drank almost neat robinsons orange squash, with hot water......(not too much). It shifted my insides and as i was breast feeding it shifted hers pretty quick too...........................
