it depends on the nature of your job. it is of course understandable that you dont want to tell them too early but sometimes it is necessary to in order to protect you and your baby from any potential work related harm. your employer is under a legal duty to do a risk assessment on you but you arent entitled to that right or any other maternity right (such as paid time off for pregnancy related appointments) until your employers know you are pregnant.
i have two children and i am a legal secretary. i told one colleague (who is also a friend) immediately so that she could help me out with lifting boxes with both my pregnancies. with my 2nd pregnancy the vast majority of my team found out when i was 8 weeks pregnant simply because i was constantly being sick!

If you work in a nursing home and are hoisting etc i would probably tell your boss so that they can ensure you are safe, they dont neccessarily have to tell other safe as long as they can put measures in place to keep you safe.
I told my boss they day after i found out, mainly as i work in a residential childrens home, and it was lucky i did as that very day one of the kids kicked of and if i hadnt informed staff would have been expected to restrain the child and put myself in harms way.
