Scans & testsblood tests
I am so petrified of blood tests - I refused to have one at the hospital on Friday - I knw I need to do it, But just am not brave enough. Any advice?
Hi I am exactly the same as you I hate needles and panic at the thought of them but they really do need to be done.
Could you have them done by a nurse at your gp's??
My GP nurse always takes my blood as she is more personal and I feel like she actually cares that she might hurt me.
I never have them done at the hospital because I feel like I'm nothing more than a number.
Good luck

I just am so so petrified. I try to be brave then i just ppull my arm away and i squirm and be sick just at the thought of it. But i know i have to do it and stop being selfish - Im just so blood test phobic!!
hey
I was really worried about having blood tests
just the thought of needles!
but they should be sympathetic about it if you explain you're scard.
I was allowed to lay down while they took some blood.
hope this helps.

Hi, I'm fine with injections but hate having bood drawn- i feel like my life is being taken! I'd say lie down and look away- sometimes, yes it is painful, but other times it's been totally fine. A know someone who is needlephobic and she recommends telling the clinic, so they don't keep you waiting and stressing about it. Also, it is safe to have a bit of gas&air (like in labour) to calm your nerves, but tell the surgry beforhand as they won't have it as standard. There are only 2 blood tests during pregnacy that are really important, and then the one for down's syndrome is optional. You need to have one about the end of your 1st trimester, then another at about 25 weeks or so. These check for diseases and conditions that could be hamful to your baby if not caught, your blood type (v important as if you are Rh negative you could be incompatible with your baby and need medication to prevent a possibly fatal situation)and later on check that all your levels are as they should be so they can give you extra iron etc if needed. I have lots of sympathy for you but you just need to take the steps that will allow you to get through this, whatever they may be.
Hi I know it's scary but you really need to have the blood tests done. I have a hughe phobia of needles and I eventually plucked up the courage to have mine done at my midwife appointment (under the agreement they would do them all at once so I didn't have to do it agani). I am so glad I did as they came back that I have a rare blood disorder (which isn't really that bad for me) but would be fatal for my baby if my partner had the same. He had to be tested and thank god he didn't have the same (it was the longest week of my life), now I know this I'm so glad I went through it for my babys sake. There are things they can only pick up on a blood test which can be so dangerous for your baby if not detected.
I would say go do it (and get it over with) then you can start enjoying your pregnancy.
Good Luck

Hi,
I have a huge phobia of needles and have refused it 4 times, at the doctors, my booking in date and on my first scan, I even plucked up the courage to go there on my own was able to having the numbing cream emla and still chickened out when they brought the needle towards me, I've been looking into being hypnotised to try and get rid of my phobia but I'm not sure if that'll even work, I know I have to do it and am really worried about if there are complications with the blood types etc but just can't bring myself to have my blood taken.
Any suggestions ? ? ?
