If you haven't had an ultrasound scan yet, you will usually be offered one around 20 weeks of pregnancy. This will be a detailed scan to monitor the growth and well-being of your baby. Check with your midwife as it will vary between NHS trusts.

Usually you book with a midwife at about 8 weeks and the antenatal clinic will send you an appointment for your first scan at around 12 weeks. You then normally have another scan at around 20 weeks which is an abnormality scan. If you haven't had an appointment yet talk to your midwife.

Quoted word for word from from a paper I got from my GP, from NHS

"The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) issued guidelines in October of 2003. In line with this guideline which provides recommendations for routine care for healthy pregnant women, a scan will now be performed at around 12 weeks of pregnancy. This scan will ONLY confirm the date of delivery and detect multiple pregnancies."

So, it is your RIGHT to have a scan at 12 weeks and if you are refused, I would recommend contacting NICE.

im having my second child and have only ever had a scan at 20 weeks as i knew when my last period was.
i was told that you are only given a scan at 12 weeks if you do not know your dates otherwise its at 20 weeks but i also think this depends on the area you living in. the scan at 12 weeks is just a blob as my friend had one much better at 20 weeks but good luck

I found that the 12 week scan was very helpful for myself and my partner to realise the enormity that there was definately a baby on the way, having had done only home tests i still had a niggling doubt that it wasn't real! With myself the picture was beautifully clear and my friends picture was much clearer than her 20 week! Don't miss out!

i didnt find out i was pregnant until i was 10 weeks pregnant and thats when i had my first booking in app with midwife. wasnt offered a scan at 12 weeks, think thats only if you suffer from a bad condition like diabetes. went to see midwife at 16 weeks then was booked in for a scan at 20 weeks. this is basically to check that babys growing ok and your estimated date baby is due.you will get a letter from hospital. its amazing to see your little baby growing inside you. i requested a picture and im expecting a boy. im 6 months pregnant.

I was given a scan at twelve weeks to confirm pregnancy and estimate my due date. this was in december. at that scan i got a beautiful clear picture of my baby. i can see so much! I was also booked in for my 20wk scan in February to check abnormality. i might be able to find out if its a girl or a boy! Contact your midwife and your GP as my GP sent a letter to the hospital and they then replied in a letter to me to confirm my appointment. hope everything goes well for you!

I had a scan at around 12 weeks called a dateing scan Then I had one at around 20 weeks as long as you had no probblems You don't get one earlyer so don't worry You have one any day soon If not tell you midwife and she might be abill to trace when it will be.

i had scans with my daughters at 12 wks and have had one with this baby to but sadly wasnt very clear the one at 20 wks was amazin my youngest is 4 and lookin at her pic to my baby one now it is so much clearer my partner was amazed to ... i only thought if scanned any early it was for compilcations am sure u wil have one at 20 wks and b sure it is worth the wait

This is my first baby, im 22 weeks now and i had my first scan at 8 weeks, 5 days and my second one at 19 weeks 6 days. i know it is different in different area depending on where you live to when and how many scans you have. i moved from the bristol area where you have two scans but where im living now you only have the 1 scan!!
