Hiya hun,
ive just googled 'can you detect a heartbeat at 5 weeks?' on tinternet and some responses seem to say that this is quite early so it might be that things will be ok for you. I really hope so for you:) Hopefully the midwife will be able to clear things up for you tomorrow.

wat kind of scan did they do hun? i had a miscarrage at 7weeks back in march n they had to do an internal scan were if all is well they can pick up the hb im now 11+weeks n had a normal scan as i was spotting in the week and all was fine my sisterinlaw had a scan at 6 weeks internal again n they picked up the heart beat fine so ring ur midwiffe to find out wats going on they should have explained it better to u when i had my miscarage they took me in to a seprat room to explain to meif things have gone wrong for u wich i hope they havnt they should have told u straight in the same way hun. did they do blood tests? xxx

hello there, I am so sorry you are hvaing this awful distress right now. I had an early scan at 7 weeks (dated from my period start date). They did an external scan and I coudl clearly see a whole baby with a heartbeat. Before this date they look for a sack to show pregnaancy in uterus and an internal scan may show a heartbeat. If you were miscarrying, you woudl certainly know as to be frank you lose a lot of blood, mostly heavily clotted and stringey and lots of debris. With a missed miscarriage, your body doesnt realise the babay has died so may retain teh baby for some time without you knowing. I woudl strongly recommend that you cal lthe doctor again or go back and ask them to check for a beat. If in fact your babay is gone (I am sorry to be so frank) then your choices are to let nature take its course or to have a DNC. The DNC will be quick and painless and will close a chapter and allow you to grieve. TO let nature take its course can be fairly distressing.

I have miscarried, ectopic and lsot a baby at 15 weeks so lots of experience in most early pregnancy care

Thanks for all your help and advice.

I spoke to the nurse who scanned me at the beginning of the week and she said that they cannot alway detect a heartbeat this early, so thats probably why she didnt mention it either way.

However, I'm now bleeding more heavily and have just started getting really bad cramps which are coming and going. Almost like constipation,trapped wind and period pain all in one, but 10 times worse!

To be honest, I am preparing myself and my partner for the bad news at the scan tomorow. I know that sounds harsh but we've had some time to think about it and there's nothing we can do to help our baby now. I just hope that the hospital will help me and give me a speedy DNC if required, as my boyfriend is going away for a week this Friday. Dont really want to go through that on my own!

I will post again after our scan tomorrow, but just wanted to say your responses have been really helpful to us.

I hope everything turns out ok for you, I will be thinking of you. I have also had bleeding
and pains (think I am 6 weeks) and am going for an internal scan tomorrow. I have
already been to the hospital and have also found, like you, that they don't explain things properly. You don't realise at the time as you are worried and stressed. I am grateful
everyone comments as they have helped me too. I will definitley be questioning
anything I don't understand tomorrow. All the best x x x

Hi everyone.

The scan told us what we were expecting. I have now had a complete miscarriage so thankfully wont need an operation etc.

Wishing everyone all the best for their babies. We're hoping to try again soon, so will be speaking to everyone on here again hopefully!
