no epidurals offered at my local hospital - should I be worried?

Hi - I've just found out that they don't offer epidurals at my local hospital. I'm a first time mum and I've tried to keep myself informed but this concerns me. I'd like to have an active birth but obviously on the other hand I might change my mind and be screaming for an epidural later! Has anybody any advice? I've heard that they don't give pethidine near delivery as it affects your baby. Also, how 'out of it' do you feel on the gas and air? I'm a wee bit of a control freak and don't like the idea of being fully on top of things! Any advice gratefully received! Anna x

i had an epidural it was bliss. i didnt go for pethidine as i was worried it was dangerous because it passed across the placenta to your baby. as it is your first it is unlikely you could manage on gas and air alone. can you not get booked into another hospital that offers epidurals . if not then go with the pethidine. when you go into second stage labour even if you are out of it as the lady above suggested i dont see this as a bad thing having gone through a 36 hour ordeal myself at xmas

hi i had diamorphine with my daughter which i was totally out of it on...not a bad thing! labour is not easy and u score no points for tryin 2 b a hero during it! and if ur distressed so is ur baby so if somethin helps take that away i say y not! wotever they give u in hospital they r doin just that...giving u it in hospital! so it cant b that bad or doctors wouldnt prescribe it :) this time i am opting 4 an epidural, havin given birth b4 i know wot 2 do regardin pushin and when 2 do so,tho from wot i can gather ppl who hv it during their 1st birth may not quite know th ropes n so sometimes need a little help 2 get baby out...maybe not wot u want,my friend done it on her own with gas n air only...sh has a high pain threshold if u feel u do then maybe u could handle it?

its a complicated situation and only u know ur own limits...personally i'm a wimp n pain really scares me so i am goin 4 all th help i can get but each 2 their own!

good luck...it does pass and havin baby in ur arms makes it all so worth it :)

Thanks for the advice - they don't tell you this stuff in the books! The next nearest hospital does do epidurals but their statistics aren't nearly as good as carlisle's. So still in a quandary! Hopefully having a tour of both hospitals will help me make a decision. x

hiya im a first time mum,i am a complete softy and wanted a epidural as i cant handle pain,i had it all plained out but that all went to pot,my waters broke at 37 weeks and on going to the hospital they said they would keep me in and induce me in 24 hours, the contractions started an hour later and was getting worse but the midwife wouldnt check me as she said it would disturb the baby!!!i just think she said that because she didnt beleive me,they wouldnt give me any drugs,in the end i nearly strangled the hubby the pain got worse they checked me and the baby was coming so they brought me the gas and air but it had ran out!!so had to wait ages for the porter to bring some more,i didnt even make it to the delivery suite,im glad i didnt opt for an epidural in the end as i could go home sooner and i was so proud of myself for doing it,it sounds like a cliche i know but it did hurt yes i wont lie but my god when they gave my the baby i just firgot all about it,at the end of the day its up to you what you want, maybe if you do go to the other hospital then you could say you might want an epidural but that you are going to see how you cope without one first of all, take care maybe have a chat with your midwife and go through your options jo x

ive had 4 births so far and im on m 5th,my 1st 2 babies i had epidurals and 1st pethidine as the labour was a long time,my last 2 i had them quick and so it was gas and air.I personally think epidurals are wonderful i would reccommend to any one, pethidine i wouldnt use ever again it made baby ill and me too,Gas and air is fabulous but only for short times,i would say under 2 hrs,so all in it depends on how long the labour is but keep options open, who knows how people differ with their own labour experiences.with m 1st i totally lost he plot after 12 hrs i felt like i was dying and i was ready to die honestly but the epidural was a life saver.strange thing is im a person that can take a lot of pain and im prett strong but labour is very strange,i think everones different and should go wth their instincts on pain relief

hi hun.
i had just gas and air on my first child but took it a bit to much so was totally out of it so wen i had my second i didnt use it untill i couldnt cope with the pain no more i also had the pethadine to help me sleep and this i found to be a great combo i intend on doing the same with the one im expecting now. even if they did do the epidural it dont mean theyd let you have it. on my first they refused told me not enough time . plus if you like to be in controll u prob wouldnt like an epudural as you have to be told when to push as you cant feel anything hun, my freind had one and hated it for that reason she said she felt like she was a kid again with her mom telling her wat to do lol. hope all goes well hun xxx
