Pain relief

i need a bit of help

i am 17 weeks pregnant and i am already worrying about the birth, i talked it over with a few people and most of them sort of decided for me that i should have an epidural.
i really dont want one because i want to feel in control of the birth, its my job to bring my baby into the world and i want to feel it all happening. unless i can be reasured i will still b in control i dont think i want it. does anyone else feel the same way? i no am a bit early on to worry about the birth but its my first time. x

hi hun
of course your worried, you havent done it before, i would keep your options open
with regards to pain relief anddont let anyone push yo into anything you dont want.
you will probably find its not as bad as you thought, at the moment you are in the unknown
all round,im not gonna say it doesnt hurt because of course it does but at the end you wil
have your beautiful baby talk to your midwife about the pain relief open to you, but dont let your worries ruin the enjoyment of your pregnancy what will be will be.
take care xxx

hi yea pain relief is a big 1 but theres a lot of options for u and they can b confusing. im a mum of 4 and im preg wi my 5th so il speak real to u and not give u jargon lol gas and air is excellent, takes a lot of the pain away u just puff on a mouthpiece wen u need it so ur in control as to how much u take. pethadine is an injection an thats ace to it takes the edge of the contractions and can b used at the same time as gas and air yes labour hurts but its nothing like the horror stories u hear [if it was that bad hun we wud all only eva hav 1 child lol] epidurals i dnt really no about apart from there a needle inserted into ur spine but as there a needle and im a wuss i cant have them lol the more relaxed u r during labour the better it is and also standing helps as gravity takes over etc. ur body is designed to deal with pain etc so dont worry. u will b ok and just in case u was wondering after the babys born and she or he are placed in ur arms the placenta is delivered then and u dnt feel it. hope this has helped. x

hi i just wanna say u have plenty of time 2 think about it so i would'nt worry 2 much yet, most birth plans go totally out the window anyway lol. I am also 17wks with my 4th and intend having an epidural as i did with other 3, i had the injection and fell asleep everytime, then woke ready 2 push ! i did feel it but there was just no pain, its up 2 u what u decide but i had 3 fab, very relaxed births and fully intend 2 have it again.
good luck with ur decision

Hiya,
I'm 17 and 33 weeks gone with my first. I am a bit scared about the birth but at I ask everyone who tries telling me horror stories ect that I dont want to know as every birth experience is different and cause if your scared during labour and birth then it will hurt more as you tense up. What we have to remember is that giving birth is natural, our bodies are designed to do it, besides if it was that bad then people wuldnt have more then one baby would they? I plan on having as much of a natural birth as possible. Try to keep an open mind. Add me on msn if you want its beckybigmouth@hotmail.com

Hi it's natural to worry about things, if i were you i'd keep an open mind about the whole pain relief option, take it from me, you don't know how you will feel once your in laboour, i think also a lot rides on how long it is, if you go into slow labour, after a couple of days you may think you want the epidural, however you may decide you don't want it and both is absolutly fine!!, they tell you to do a birth plan, which is rediculas really, like how are you supposed to know!!, but even if you do anything can be changed, it's just a guide to the midwifes on what your opinions are on the pain relife issue, it you want something whilst your there just ask! Good luck, don't spend your entire pregnancy worrying about it xxxx

all the way through my pregnancy i was convinced i was going to have an epidural, but as i got cloer to the due date i changed my mind, and during the actual birth i had gas and air and pethadine, and it was the best birth, it weird to say but i sort of enjoyed it! x

dont worry you will feel it happening all right. when you go into second stage labour you will be screaming for an epidural - believe me . just thank your lucky stars that you have this method of pain relief available to you.

im 25 and had a baby boy in february

i had read books and the internet for all my information, but still didnt no wat the experience was going 2 be like as i'm a first time mum. i went for my check up wit midwife on thursday afternoon and i was already 1cm dilated? didnt no wat this meant still dont no??? went walking round town shopping. that nite woke out of sleep at half one wit tummy cramps. This was labour! had a 'show', 2 baths, rang hospital for advice - hold off coming in as long as possible!!! about half 3 pains coming quicker, got my partner 2 drive to hospital. At 7.08am Jack born 6lb15 1/2oz, gas & air, no stitches!.

Didnt think i could do it! But you get through it and you have a wee mircale at the end. all worth it.

Hi - can you still stand up and move around on pethidine or are you too out of it? x

Posted on 17/07/2008 12:21:27

pethadine helps you relax i used it on my last child and it gave me a chance to have 5 mins but i was still moving around. again gas and air is the same but you can over do it n end up high as a kite lol. an epudiral on the other hand you loose all controll and have to be told when to push my mate had it and said it was the worst thing ever as she was being told to push but just couldnt feel when to as there was no erge at all she said shes never felt so out of controll . take care all n good luck xxx
