Pain reliefSPD & epidural?
due to me having spd & pelvic girdle pain my physio has told me that i need to know my movement limits for labour such as how far i can comfortably open my legs but the thing is this is my second baby and i am definately having an epidural this time!
just wondering if i have an epidural then i'm not gonna feel the movement in my pelvis (which will be nice lol!) but does this mean i could cause more damage as i could be damaging the muscles and ligaments more and not know about it until afterwards!?
Hi
I had the epidural as my spd pain was horrendous,,,,The hospital were brilliant with me re this, it has SPD written in big letters all over my notes, so everyone knew to make sure you move both legs together , just tell them to not open them too wide,,,,,,,,I ended up with an emergency caesarean anyway ( other problems),,,,but they just need telling so they can carefully move you as not to do any damage !

HI there, a little help for SPD!Just been diagnosed and already in agony. A friend and fellow sufferer I met on another forum and i both decided to try a new spd maternity support from lafeenoire maternity , its like a corset and really lovely to wear. Found we could get on with the normal things again like shopping!!We both highly recommend it once you have a substantial bump. Dosnt break the bank either They are also dead nice and you can email them and they actually write back to YOU!! Really refreshing!
The other thing is , does anyone know how to prevent it as this is my first pregnancy and if I thought I was definately going to suffer every time it might make me think twice about the next, I am youngish, fairly fit and not over weight so why me?

Hi there
i too have spd and have also been told by my physio that everybody has to be made aware that i have it. I have been told the only positions i will be able to give birth in will be on all fours or squattin! all very dignified lol. Jo..... u wont damage the ligaments etc if u have an epidural we naturally are able to get into those positions for birth and the reason why we get spd is due to producing too much hormone called relaxin.
Su, as regards further pregnancies i really dont think there is any way of preventing it as it is totally up to whether our bodies produce the right amount of the relaxin hormone, i didnt have spd with my first but i have it severly with this one its out of our control hun! Hope this helps everyone :)

I read somewhere that some women with SPD tie a ribbon around their legs, which only allows them to open them as far as their tolerance will allow, even if they can't feel the pain due to having an epidural. Not sure if that helps at all!
ive just had a baby and i had spd so bad i was unable to walk without help from 20 weeks, by the end i was bed bound, but i got no help other than crutches with so i researched it, when you are in alot of pain and cant move your legs get your partner or a friend to help, get a rope or string or even a dressing gown tie and tie it roun your nees, then open your legs alowing the rope to losten then when you are at the position your hurting too much tie it tigthtly, the reason you do it at the worst pain is so you know how mcuh you can open your legs on a bad day as you dont want to go in to labour and take it in on a good day and find you vcant open your legs.
although i had such bad spd, when i was 39+6 my spd completely disapeared except when i did certian things, i was worried i wouldnt be able to have a good birth, but all my labour pains were in my back and i could tell exactly what i could and couldnt tolerate, my labour lasted 30 mins so i was lucky but listen to your body i ttold the dos to leve me alone because he was examining me he had been doing it for 25 mins i told him to stop as my body had had enough fiddling and within 5 mins my son was born, the doc fiddling was causing my pains to beome worse, so listen to your body
Thank you for posting about your experiences with spd and labour! It's made me feel a bit better about the whole thing :-)
The only way you would end up having spd in every pregnanice is if you have joint hypermobility or another disorder that makes your body over flexable. Other wise everyone has a 50% chance each time. No known prevention so it's about luck for most people. But saying that each time it can be different. My 1st I had it badly, they offered me a wheel chair but in my 2nd it was more managable only do what your body tells you is possible, if you push yourself you will find it gets worse. Now again with my 3rd i'm finding it hard going this time. hope it helps.
