OtherMaternity Leave
Hi everyone.
im almost 28 weeks and have handed in my letter saying when i would like to start my maternity leave which will be the end of oct a few weeks ago. now im thinking that maybe i should have asked to start earlier as im suffering with bad sickness and am tired constantly. i am taking odd days off work anyway.
i was wondering if anyone knew whether you could change the date you want your maternity to start once you have already handed it in?
thanks for your help xx
Not sure if you can change the date but you can ask your gp or midwife to sign you off until the date of your maternity leave. If it's pregnancy related it won't be counted towards sick leave but not sure what would happen about getting paid! Probably usual company sick pay procedures would be followed!
Hope this helps! :)

hiya,
in my pregnancy book (lol geek!!) it says if you want to change your date you must give your employer notice of the new date at least 28 days before the new date or the old date, whichever is earlist. Hope this helps.
It dont make muxh sense to me lol.
Good luck :D x
hi,. thank you for your replies. do you know if they can enforce maternity if you get sig ned off sick? xx
i'm not sure if this is the same with all employers, but at my work im under the imprssion if your having time of work in the late stages of pregnancy they can insist you go early anyway.....check the maternity policy!! Hope you feel better soon xxx
hiya catherine,
im sure its if your off sick in the last 4 months of pregnancy or, the last 4 weeks before your maternity starts then your employer can start your maternity leave but i am not sure. If you search into google that always helps just search 'maternity rights' or even a full question lol like 'can i change the date i want to start my maternity leave' direct gov is usually the best place for answers :D
Hope this helps

sorry i meant last 4 weeks of pregnancy not months sorry.
u need to be signed off with a non pregnancy related illness e.g stress in the last 4 weeks before ur mat leave start date,i just have been my mat leave date is 27th sept,if ur signed off with a preganancy related illness in those 4 weeks then ur mat leave will automatically start, its the government who state this its not the choice of ur employer.
hope this helps check directgov.co.uk if ur not sure.

speak to your manager or hr department.i left a week earlier than i planned and i just asked and it ws changed.being pregnant means things change all the time.they might be nice and let you go if you want really to
hi everyone. thanks for your help. i will have a word with my manager. thanks xx
Hi All,
I have had a look at the Mothercare site and it gives you some information on maternity leave on there which is really handy to know.
You can always use holidays before your maternity starts which means you will still get the same amount of timew off with your baby that you intended to and get your well earned rest before that.
Hope all goes well xx
