Antenatal Classes

Would anyone recommend paying for private antenatal classes? This is my first baby and due to numerous mistakes (by midwife) I haven't been able to get on any NHS antenatal classes, there is quite a few women in the same position as me and I was just wondering if it's worth paying for private classes or just trying to research everything ourselves with books etc.

I am 33 wks pregnant and I havent been able to get to any classes either due to having fractured my leg and wearing a caste.
I asked advice on the mums forum and got replies from mums who said I wouldnt be missing much if I didnt go anyway. My main concearn was breathing through the pain, but hey isnt labour supposed to be the most natural thing in the world? I am sure we will both cope.Lets face it animals dont have classes do they, and they manage just fine!! I am sure it will all come natural, but obviously the decision of whether to pay private is your own choice.Whatever you chose,I wish you luck x

Hello, I had my first child 6 years ago and went to classes then and didn't really learn anything there that I couldn't learn by watching the pregnancy & Birth programmes on sky! In fact, 18 months later, I went with a friend to one of her antenatal classes and I learnt one thing there that just explained the best positioning in order to push, with regard to the postion required for the pelvis.
Really you will not be missing much by not having class. In fact, my midwife this time, has not bothered to put me into any classes as alot of it is just common sense and whatever makes you comfortable at the end of the day! When are you due?

hi there, i had my little boy exactly 6mnths ago today & i didnt get offered to go to antenatal classes either, i saw lots of signs at the hospital but my midwives (i had 2 cos i moved to a different area at 36weeks) so i was a bit confused esp as this was my 1st pregnancy. i will say that i took it upon myself to phone the labour ward & spoke to a midwife there, arranged to go there to have a look around which was the most useful thing i did as knowing where im going, where i was going to have my baby, where i was going to stay afterwards was a HUGE help & gave me piece of mind... i didnt go on my own i took my step mum...
also had i known about this site it would have been great as its really useful...
good luck.... claire

I'm 31 wks pregnant with my first baby and haven't been offered much by the midwife so was wondering on the best option regarding classes and starting to panic. After reading your responses i feel more comfort knowing that i wont miss much by not going to ante natal classes as the private ones are very expensive. I'm sure everything will come naturally when the time comes - good luck xx
