Labour worries

How soon after birth do you have to cut the baby's cord?

How soon after birth do you have to cut the baby's cord? I'm worried in case I give birth before the midwife arrives!

The baby's cord is generally clamped and cut immediately after birth although it doesn't have to be. To put your mind at rest, your midwife should be happy to go through emergency procedures with you in more detail, or you could ask at your antenatal class.

It's good that you're thinking about all the emergency situations that could happen, but hopefully it won't come to that.

hi i have had my baby and i had questions about the cord i was told that you can have the cord cut straight away or you can wait till it stops pulsating if you wait your baby will benefit as the best part of the blood is in the last bit unfortunatly i was unable to have this in the end as my baby wasnt breathing but if everything goes ok then you can wait and as i said earlier it benefits baby if you can wait but the choice is entirely yours

Unless there are complications, you can request that the cord stays intact til the placenta is delivered!

There is something called lotus birth where the full cord and placenta are left attched to the baby until they naturally seperate! I'm not suggesting that this is something foe you to consider! but it does make interesting reading. (google it!)
