I was booked for a homebirth with my daughter so i will try and help as much as poss! Yes the midwives are allowed to give Pethedine depending on where you live, is how you get the pethedine some midwives carry it, but i had to get a prescription off my doctor for it. As i didnt manage my homebirth(i had to go to hosp after a few hours) i cant comment on the mess i made, but as a Paramedic, i have attended loads of home births and the mess isnt as ad as you would think!. I just got some plastic sheeting from B+Q, some incontinence sheets from work and some old towels off my mum.
Hope this helps and Good Luck!!! xx

The midwives clean most of the mess for you, they take away the placenta etc with them. I have an old shower curtain ready for my homebirth, so it can just be thrown away afterwards.
Also you can have pethidine at home, but here you have to request it when you call the midwife out, they don't carry it as standard.

hi...i have had two homebirths both times were quick and both times the midwife HASNT made it and my partner has had to deliver!!!i would suggest you ring as soon as you have the first twinge so to give them enough time to get there!!it all depends on where you live to what kind of care you get i think, i have had no problems both times there hasnt been much mess and the midwives have cleaned up and got me into shower etc much better than hospital personally!!!But a friend of mine had a home birth in brighton and the midwives turned up delivered and were gone within half an hour just taking the placenta away with them!!Mine have always stayed at least two hours!!so long as you have some old towels and plastic sheeting there really shouldnt be much mess and you should be fine!!You should ask your midwife about it just to see how it all works in your area and make sure they know thats what you want!!!How far gone are you??Have you had any complications in your last pregnancies or birth???

hi..congratulations....yes you are right they are just talking you out of it, they do that but you must not let them if a home birth is what you want, im sure they are very good at talking people out of it, luckily they have always been very supportive about home births with me, so long as everything is ok and no complications, you should be fine.
My second was born after 4 hours by my partner (midwife turned up about 20mins after!!) and my third about was born after about 40 minutes again delivered by my partner(midwives werent too far behind this time about 10mins!)
how old are your other children??
