i was a little bit anaemic while i was pregnant, but i lost a lot of blood during delivery and became very anaemic after. a few tips for increasing iron absorption:

eat meat and veg together as it helps your body absorb iron. drink orange juice with a meal as that also helps absorb iron. dont drink tea or coffee for an hour before, or an hour after eating iron rich foods as it stops the absorption of iron.

good foods are:

red meat
peas and broccoli (peas have more iron than broccoli)
spinach
fortified breakfast cereals (most say if they are fortified with iron and vitamins)
raisins
and my personal favourite - dark chocolate. make sure it is 70% coco solids.

hope that helps. x

Asparagus is very good too. Wash it first then bed until it snaps. Place in a frying pan or wok with a little butter, water and lemon juice, cook until turns bright green (should still be crunchy) and then season before removing from the pan. A delicious snack or starter and very rich in iron. Cheap too if you get it from your local veg shop!

Hi this is my first time on here and first time mom to be in july. I too have a problem with eating healthy. I start of with dry crackers and black tea for the morning sickness, which by the way is all day not just the mornings. and then its down hill from there.

take today i had a full breakfast of 2 eggs 2sasuges 2 bacon 2 toast and beans, i would never have eaten that befor the pregnancey. Pleases any sugestions for healthy lunches and dinners that are filling. At this rate i will be giving birth to an elephant.

Try homemade style soups from the chiller section. They are abit more expensive but I find them really filling. Or just have ordinary soup and have a few slices of wholemeal or granary bread with it. I also quite like the canned ready made chilli. Just put it with some rice. I often find I cant eat it all - and I have a huge appetite! Ive always eaten big (mostly) homemade meals and I found early pregnancy really difficult when I found I couldnt eat what I usually did. I would eat soups, andwiches and fruit mainly. Eating little but often. This tends to help with digestion and heartburn too.

Hi,
I have a 2yr old son and Im 30wks pregnant with baby no2.
I am the same, I dont like hardly any fruit or veg and do tend to eat alot of 'junk' etc.
I did try abit when I was pregnant 1st time, just ate grapes quite abit as only fruit I really like and lived on apple juice! lol. think it was one of my cravings ;-)
I still had choc and crisp etc and had a glass of pepsi most days (but just one sml glass) I did eat proper meals aswell. I can cook, so had home-made pasta/ lasagne/ chilli etc but still had to have my usual snacks inbetween! I wasnt really overweight, just a normal sort of weight for my height.
I was anaemic later on with my 1st & had to take iron tablets, but was prone to it before I got pregnant.
Anyway, I had a great pregnancy and my son was a healthy 8lb, went 7 days overdue.
I have been abit worse this time, which I feel guilty about but not anaemic so far so just hoping everythings ok like last time.
take care & try not to worry x
