Diet & fitnessTaking Folic acid..Please help
Hi
My name is Rach and im 10 weeks pregnant with my first child. Ive only just found out im pregnant therefore havnt been taking folic acid and my midwife says its too late to start now, i feel dreadful cos its only me to blame if my baby has any neural defects, i spoke to my midwife about it and she seemed very unsupportive. can anyone else let me know if they didnt take it n if it affected there pregnancy/baby in any way.
Thanks all and hope all your pregnancies are as amazing as they should be

hi im pregnant for 2nd time but first time round i didnt find out until i was 17 weeks pregnant so it was too late and i had a healthy baby boy who is now 4, i did take it this time im 32 weeks now, but dont know if it does make much difference i wouldnt worry too much, just think of how many people smoke and drink all the way through their pregnancies and have healthy babies, not that i would say to do that i just mean surely missing a bit of folic acid shouldnt make too much difference good luck x
there is folic acid naturally in your diet aswell but i shouldnt imagine i makes much difference.i have a memory like a goldfish when im pregnant so i can never remember to take them or if i have taken them.
my daughter was fine and i had taken them when i remembered and have done the same this time round.
good luck.dont fret
Folic acid just decreases the risk of your baby having neural tube defects - it doesn't stop it. I had awful hyperemesis for the first 13 weeks so even though I tried to take folic acid - I barely kept anything down.
Try not to worry because you folic acid is contained in loads of food substances anyway - you have probably been eating it without noticing and your folic acid levels in your blood are normal range, you do need to be literally fasting for ages to have a depleted supply in your body.
If you wanted to, you could start taking some folic acid for the next 2 week - might not make any difference but may help give you piece of mind
Good luck
xx
Try not to worry yourself, hun if you didn't know you were pregnant what could you of done different!!!, the folic acid helps to decress the risk but that doesn't mean it;s full proof and i know theres lots of women out there that didn't take it at all, and have gone on to have perfectly healthy babies, so put it out of your mind as best you can, and get on with enjoying your surprise!!! congrats hun xxx
i dont really know hun but in sure it would be fine! but you have to think remember the time before pregnant people started taking folic acid and they where fine! dont worry too much hun just enjoy it i know there is always somethin at the back of your mind!
but enjoy it hayles n bu,mp xxx
Thank you all so much for your lovely comments, it's nice to kinow your not alone in any of the pregnancy worries that im sure everyone has..you've all cheered me up no end.
Thanks again
Rach and bump xx
Hi Johno
I'm 15 weeks with our first baby and have been taking pregnacare tablets. You can take them during conception, pregnancy and whilst breast feeding. They have folic acid in them along with all the other vitamins which help you whilst pregnant, my doctor said I did not need to take an additional folic acid supplement as I was taking these.
I have felt fab (so far) don_t know if it is down to the additional vitamins I am taking or am just lucky!!! I hope I haven_t spoken too soon!!!!!
Have a look at them if you are worried, you can pick them up from Boots or any supermarket. A good diet is as good as anything though.
hi
i used them when i was trying and i stoped because i was not getting there once i stoped 2 months later it happened i was having a baby after that everytime i was trying for another i never did take them again all 3 of my kids are ok and happy
Don't worry folic acid is in loads of food like liver and green veg just make sure you eat some of thatt every week. Good luck xxxx
