Baby equipment

first baby due April 25th, how many blankets and types of blankets would i really need?

currently i have one swaddling blanket for night time and one thicker blanket for covering the baby up during outings in the car or pram. is that enough? do i need more? and what would they be used for?

use a sleeping bag for night time! they are much much easier as baby cant kick the blankets off and there is no risk of getting smothered by the blankets.
however, if you wish to use blankets. for covering up at night a swaddle blanket is not usually warm enough but it depends on the type you use and the general temperature of your bedroom.. when my first child was being swaddled, she had on a vest, sleepsuit, the swaddle blanket and one celluar blanket over her.
layers are better than one thick blanket though, so once i'd stopped swaddling her, at night, she had a flat sheet and 2 celluar blankets over her. i use a sleeping bag with my second baby (now 10 wks old) as it is much easier to keep her warm. her sleeping bag is 2.5 tog and with that she doesnt need any other blankets.
i have 3 blankets for the car/pram as they are bound to get sick on them! plus, you'll need more than one for when one is in the wash anyway.

what do you dress her in under the sleeping bag?
i bought the swaddleme wrap after reading reviews on it. im new to all this so every piece of advice is very helpful :)

she wears a short sleeved vest and a sleepsuit and then her sleeping bag. our bedroom gets down to about 16 degrees but she is nice and warm all night.

swaddling new babies is brilliant and i have done it with both of my children. my first child was swaddled until 12 weeks old when she learnt how to get out of it. my second baby was swaddled until 4 or 5 weeks old as she learnt how to get out of it also. swaddling helps them feel much more secure when they are newly born.
the advice now though is to only swaddle for the first month as there is research which suggests it can increase the risk of SIDS.

wouldnt the babys hands get cold? because in a swaddle blanket, baby's arms would be tucked inside...im worried she'll catch a draught suddenly

it doesnt matter if hands or feet get cold. as long as their body is warm that is the vital part. her sleepsuits actually have a little turn over on them so that does help but her hands still get a little chilly but it doesnt wake her up at all.

Thanks for that, I might invest in a sleeping bag
