Your babyAcid reflux or colic
Ive got a 4 week old baby and he seems to be in pain with his belly, it takes him ages to settle and will only settle when sitting up. He really strains when doing a poo and always aching his back in pain. I rub his belly but that makes him scream more in pain. I thought it was colic ive tried everything from different ways of winding, change of milk, ive tried infacol, dentinox, grip water im now on cow and gate comfort but nothing seems to help. Someone mentioned it could be acid reflux but not sure. Has anyone else had any of these problems and if so has anything helped. Thanks
Hi congratulations on your new little man!! my little boy was constipated when he was only a few weeks old and he used to strain something terrible when he was trying to have a poo it could go on for an hour or more!!(bless) i started giving him cooled boiled water a couple of OZ a day and that did the trick.hope he is feeling more comfortable soon x x
it could possibly be acid reflux, if it is the best thing to do is keep him tilted at a 45 degree angle. or go to the doc u can get baby gaviscon!! hope this helps x
Hi there
Congratulations on the birth of your lo and I'm sorry you're having these problems. I too have been down this route, and please do not be fobbed off with colic by docs, there is no such thing as colic, it was a word created by docs in the 1950's who could explain why some babies cry for no apparant reason. My lo is now 19 weeks and have severe silent reflux (doesn't vomit) and a cows milk protein allergy. We had problems right from the first formula bottle given, and the allergy knocked her into reflux. Due to being fobbed off with the mystical colic, my lo went untreated for over 9 weeks and the damage that was done to her little insides took another 9 weeks to begin to heal. She was in chronic pain and it has just been hell on earth. Infant gaviscon is the first step for little refluxers, but didn't even touch my lo's reflux. She is currently on a massive dose of Omeprazole, Domperidone and ranitidine and as I said it has taken weeks to start having any effect. Be your baby's voice, if you think something is wrong, push and push until you get somewhere. Some of the most common symptoms in refluxers who don't vomit are; chronic pain, arching their back, persistent hiccups, unconsolable crying. I hope your lo doesn't have this because it's a horrible bloody thing, the other thing is that most babies who have reflux also have a cows milk protein allergy which then has the symptom of reflux. Good luck I wish you well, let me know how you get on xxx
PS sorry also meant to add that the inconsistent poops and also fighting with feeds ie spitting the teat out then screaming for it back are also classic tell tale signs. The only thing a doc can prescribe is gaviscon so if you are unhappy for any reason, please demand a paed referralxx
im going through the same thing at the moment, my daughter is 5 weeks old and she is really straining and screamin in pain.... i've tried infacol, dentinox, now gripe water.... she was in hospital last week and they said she had acid reflex and gave her gavisgon in every feed... she doesn't strain as much now but she still does a bit =(.... im in 2 ways of changing her feed but all the medical people have warned me not too, that they will if need be Xx
I felt like I was the only one who had a grizzly baby for 13 weeks as she had the classic signs of colic & reflux. It got me quite down at times but I always had in mind this is not gonna last forever. Bebe has now turned a corner week 14 as she has slowly developed burps and trumps more! Raising her mattress at an angle. A bouncer chair & letting her fall asleep upright on my chest, infacol, changing to anti-colic bottles, was all I could do. Now we can lay her down flat whilst changing her without screams and we get giggles, smiles and playtime. Having a friend, partner or family that are good listeners and can give time out is a big help.
My baby is on cow & gate comfort,i find it amazing for colic and constipation.x
My daughter is now 7 weeks old, she also appeared to have 'colic' but reading some of these posts and connecting the symptoms i think she may have acid reflux. I to have tried things like infacol which didnt work. Recently we have started infant massage on a daily basis which seems to help - she's more relaxed and therefore now burps and trumps so not in as much pain and many more poo nappies! however she is still being sick after feeds and doesnt like being laid on her back - the only way she'l sleep is upright on me which means i cant put her down and dont have a minute to myself - anyone got any tips?
yes i had the exact same prroblem my daughter is now 11 weeks old today and for the last week i have put her on cow and gate comfort colic and constipation.... so far its so much better firstly her sick is no longer like what i called cottage cheese, it really wasnt nice but fingers crossed the new milk helps
