olivia's routine at that age was:

6am - wake up
7/7.30am - 4oz bottle and porridge for breakfast
9.30-11.30am - nap
12pm - lunch and pudding with water
2.30-4.30pm - nap
5pm - dinner, whatever we were having, pudding, water
6.30pm - sometimes she'd want a quick 20-30 min nap but not always
7.30pm (ish) - bath (but not every night),
8pm - 8oz bottle
8.30pm - bed

Since roby got ill he hasnt slept through except a couple of nights. He is in his cot now though finally lol but wakes up 2-4 times a night.i dont give him milk or water just a cuddle n he goes back to sleep!
At the moment he has 3 mealsa day with water and two 9oz milk one at breakfast n one at bedtime 7-8pm but he wont sleep unil 9-10pm.

no of course you're not doing something wrong.
what time does he wake up? what is his routine?

Posted on 08/01/2012 09:37:38

he usually wakes up through the night at - 1ish, 3ish and 6ish but i cant understand why, he isnt too hot or cold, hes not wet, hes not hungry =/
last night i got him to sleep at 9am (earliest in a long time!), but he woke up at 10, 11.30, 1.30, 3.30, 5 and then he wanted to oversleep past 8am! but i woke him up lol iv cut out anything sweet to see if that helps and iv told my mil not to give him any juice/chocolate (not that he has a lot anyway) to see if thats part of it.

8am - wake up
8:30am - 7oz milk in bottle 2oz milk in porrige/breakfast cereal and a yogurt
11:30am - nap for about an hour
1pm - dinner, pudding(sometimes he doesnt want it), water
3pm - nap for about an hour
5pm - tea, pudding, water
8pm - 9oz milk (sometimes he wants it earlier)

Hi Sam, he could be overtired if he's waking that many times in the night - I would try to get him down for first nap earlier, maybe not awake for more than 2.75-3 hours maybe slightly less. I'd get him up earlier in the morning too - if you want him to go to bed earlier at night that is. Max was around 8-9 months when he started going to bed at 8pm but he would wake around 4-5am and come in bed with me, then up at 6am. He didn't sleep straight through until he was 11 months and then it happened all of a sudden. He now sleeps from 8pm till 6am, sometimes he wakes up a bit earlier.
I found that max's sleeping got really bad at 10 months just before he started crawling etc so it could be that roby is getting ready to start doing something new and things may settle down again afterwards.
If he's wanting his milk before bedtime as he is hungry you could try giving him his tea slightly later in the evening and giving him a small snack mid afternoon to keep him going, or give him supper before bedtime. Once the bedtime has become a bit earlier it won't be a problem though. Max started having snacks about 10 months old but sometimes two snacks a day were too much for him at that age so I just played it by ear. My cousins baby was having two snacks a day from 8 months though so they are all different. And remember to increase his meals gradually as he gets older too it may be that he just needs a few more spoonfuls each meal to fill him up a bit more, he will bring some back or refuse it if its too much. Its all trial and error isn't it, but very tiring when they are waking constantly! xxx

i was thinking of giving him supper but what should i give? just a bit of porrige/cereal?
he is starting new things lol so u may be right! he is walking holding ur hands and is constantly trying to make u let go by peeling his fingers away lol he doesnt realise that he cant do it on his own yet! he isnt interested in crawling at all though!
should i let him sleep as long as he wants for his naps or wake him? this morning i woke him coz i thought if he stays asleep past 8 he will go to bed even later! but i dont usually wake him from his naps.
and i will try more food :) he is a greedy monkey anyway but i suppose with all this walking around he is gonna use more energy therefore need more food :)

dont worry about him not crawling - some babies dont and go straight to walking. olivia barely crawled. she cruised furniture at 10 months but did not walk unaided until 14mths. i do agree with sharon though in that he is probably starting new things etc and that is disturbing his sleep - it is quite normal.

definitely try porridge or cereal before bed as it may help.

i also agree that he may be overtired from that 3pm nap until bedtime is a long time and it may be that he is overtired and that is why you are struggling. equally though, it may not be and it may be what we said about his sleep being disturbed by him being more active. they struggle to turn their minds off while they are young to be able to sleep. i certainly would not wake him from his naps though as they say the more they sleep, the more they sleep. every child is different but as you'll see from my routine above - olivia was sleeping for 4 hours during the day and 10 hours at night. roby is only getting 2 hours of nap time during the day.

last few days roby has had porrige before bed and its seemed to help a little as he isnt waking til 3ish.
iv tried getting him up earlier but to be honest im knackered at the minute so thats not worked on my behalf lol.
his naps are getting worse, i mean cat naps like 15-20mins 2-3 times a day and unless we are out and about he will fight it and tantrum! saying that he had 2 1/2 hours in one go today but thats all and hes still awake laughing at himself!
i was thinking he may be teething again as hes dribbling a lot but no others signs yet =/ he isnt drinking as much water recently but i thought that could be because he is filling up on food?
as for his food intake - i feed him untill he doesnt want anymore so its his decision but surely if he needed more he would keep eating?? occasionally he has organix snacks
soooo tired :( xx

yes i he needed more food he'd keep eating.

dont worry about the water - olivia barely drank water until 1yr old.

it's difficult because he could be fighting his naps because 1) he either doesnt want as much on that particular day or 2) he is overtired. all you can do is try to get him down and see what happens. freya only catnaps - she does 10 minutes here and there throughout the day.
