Working mums & going back to work

Back to work

My current employer wants me to stay on another year or pay back my maternity pay. Can they do that as I really do not want to go back to work.

i dont think they can make you pay back your maternity pay,you are entitled to quit your job and work your notice during your maternity leave was thats what I did. I know you can get advice from the jobcentre about rights during and after maternity leave, or maybe ring citizens advice? im sure they cant make u pay back yr maternity leave, thats a disgusting thing for them to say to you. you are legally entitled to it after you have worked for them for the minimum period |(cant remember how long that is?abt 26 wks i think??) and every woman is entitled to it,and your decision whether to return to work or not should not affect it at all.they are pressuring you with what sounds to me like its actually illegal, id ring citizens advice. hope this help, keep us posted xx

I had to pay some of my Mat pay back as I didnt return but you dont have to work a year, thats ridiculous and they shouldnt have said that. Contact ACAS and ask them for advice (theyre very good) then arnmed with whatever theyve said, go back to your employers. If you need to send letters or anything keep a copy and send recorded delivery so you know they got them if they are going to be difficult. Hopefully it will get sorted very easily and quickly x
