Weaning

training cups

hi everyone. i am currently weaning my 5month old baby now the past 2 months. was on one solid a day now progressing onto two. i have tried introducing her onto apple juice or orange in a training cup...first advent magic cup. then tesco weaning cup. both no good. baby is trying to suck and cries when the juice comes out of the spout and refuses to drink.

should i or is there anything else i can try to help give her juice at meal times? or should i just give her juice in a bottle? or stick with her milk following her meals? any tips or advice would be grateful.

Thanks

I have also tried training cups on my 4 month old but with no luck - so I tried to suck out of myself and it was impossible so I don't know how they expect babies to use them! I know they don't reccommend babies using bottles for juice but I can't see any other way at the moment.

i use a bottle only when my baby is poorley and wont take fluid. i see it as they are better having it out of a bottle than having nothing at all. my girl will only drink it if its warm whether its in a beaker or a bottle. and we dont use baby juice either because she dont like it! so we use asdas smart price cordial just enough for a flavour and a bit if colour. we have always used tommy tipee free flow cup from boots/asds/tesco. and we never looked back with it, i do recommend them. my lil one could hold that beaker herself from the day i gave it to her. if you are happy using a bottle then use a bottle. its more important that baby gets fluid when on solids so they dont get constipated, in boots they do a bottle to beaker cup so if ur baby gets stuck on a bbottle u could always get one of those. but it is more important that u r both happy. screw the rules! hope this helps good luck

Hi, I know they tell you that the ones you have to work at to get anything out are better but like you i found them useless. We have now moved onto the tommie tippee cups that have spouts that are free flowing when they are open but you can shut them off by laying the spout down onto the lid. They are more messey as they will spill some of the contents if turned upside down, but it gets them used to cups without the battle to get the liquid out and i found in time she accepted this cup much easier. I use just boiled then pre-cooled water in her cup and it didn't take long for her to get used to it. I'm sure you can get these cups easly, however i know i've brought them in boots and asda before. The key thing with Hannah was to keep trying and when she was ready she just suddenly started to drink from the cup and hasn't looked back! xx

i tried them all, and spent a fortune on them, i agree the tomee tippee tradional one is definetly the easiest but i found that my daughter was able to use the tomee tipee flask type with a bendy flex sraw inside, long before she could use the no spill type. i also punctured the drink spout with a knife on her no spill type just to get her used to it, it dripped out very slowly but it encouraged her to suck too.

i tried moving my now one year old on to tippee cups when he was 6 months he turned them down but every other drink i'd try to get him to use it, how ever this didn't work so wat i do now is i use a paper cup sit him on my lap with about a centimeter of water / juice in the cup and i tip it slowly in to his mouth once a day to get him used to drinking out of a big cup, but i do make sure he has a sleeved bib on so it doesn't matter if a little gets spilt. Now he tries to tip it in to his own mouth but lets me controll how fast the flow is. Some babies will not get used to them so just let them do things at their own time and pace. some won't use tippee or training cups at all, if they r ready to use a big cup sit with them and do it for them till u feel confident to let them do it on there own.

the other thing would be to put the juice in a bottle first to get her used to the tasted of the juice before moving her on to a tippee cup.
