Weaning

My baby wont drink her bottles now she is eating!!!

My little girl is 6 months old and is now eating 3 meals a day and loves her food! She was drinking 3 bottles a day (8oz bottles)The problem i have now is she wont drink much of her bottles!? I always give her the milk first, for example she only had 5oz this morning at 8.30am then had porridge for breakfast at 10am. Then califlower cheese for lunch and a fromange frais at 12.30pm. Then when her bottle was due at 2.30pm she reused it, tried again at 3.30pm but not interested! She wont drink juice or water so i worried that she may not be getting enough fluids? (Although her porridge and lunch are made with water) Antone else have the same problem????

hi yes i had this problem, with my daughter. i was so worried when she started refusing milk so early on. MW did reassure that as long as she was getting calcium via other forms of dairy it would not affect her growth, nutriotion & weight gain.

on waking i use to feed her the munch bunch yougart drinks, cos she was at her hungriest andwouldn't refuse it. she was quite a petite baby, but shes now 3 and taller than most of her same aged peers at nursery. xxLk

Hi, from 6 months they ideally need 18-20oz per day but you can include any that you mix in with cereals etc in that total. I had a nightmare getting any milk down my son when I stopped breastfeeding so I know how worrying it is! If you can get 5-6oz down her morning and night plus mix some in with porridge etc then I wouldn't worry too much about it. My health visitor told me that if you heat the formula really hot (but not boiling) then keep adding to a weetabix that you can get up to 8oz formula in one weetabix! But my little man wouldn't eat them so that was no good for us! You could also try giving her some formula in a cup, some babies like to try it that way when they are on solids and you might get a little bit more down that way. Good luck and try not to stress too much! :-))xx

Oh just read the bit about the water/juice issue, now that she's on solids its important that you do keep her hydrated and there is water in baby food/purees but she will also need drinks of water between or with meals, my son again was awkward with this and I tried loads of different baby cups but the only one he liked was the tommee tippee tip it up cup with soft valved spout. They say not to use valved cups but he only ever had water in it and at 12 months we went on to free flowing cups completely - at the time with his milk intake also being low I was just concerned about getting any fluids down him, so it might be worth giving the tommee tippee cup a try if you haven't already, or trying a few different ones I know that's expensive though. Hopefully you'll find one that she will like. If all else fails I used to get milk down my son by giving him the bottle when he was falling asleep - from 7 months that was the only way I could get any down him at all! Hope that you don't have to resort to that! :-))xx

.... My lo refused the milk point blank, it was like her tastebuds just changed, i breast fed for 9weeks before giving formula at night. i can remember getting really upset ...forgot to say in my earlier post MV said never ever attempt to force feed her.

Hi Im too having a similar problem. my lo is having 3 meals a day plus snacks and will only have one bottle per day. The only way I can get any milk in her is to give her a couple of petit filous for her dessert or as a snack. I dont think there is much you can do if they wont drink it. My lo wont drink milk out of the sippy cup but she loves water or orange juice. She loves the Tomee Tippee old style sippee cup because its not too big or heavy and easy for her to handle. The other one she seems to like is Boots own for 6months plus. Im glad Im not the only mummy having problems getting milk into their baby,. I too got upset because people say you should be giving her at least this a day but you can only give them as much as they will drink!!!
