WeaningAm I doing this right?
My 7 Month old little boy was a month early, and was poorly for a while under G.O.S.H so we had to put of weaning him until a few weeks ago.
We have finally started and after what feels like a struggle I finally feel I am getting somewhere. As he is now taking it.
I was just wondering if you would mind taking a look at what I am giving him and just giving me some pointers really, as I am not sure if I am doing this right.
This is his routine today (which is pretty similar now most days):
8:30pm - 8oz bottle - (he took it all)
10am - Bowl of Baby Porridge - (Ate it all)
1pm: 8oz Bottle - (took about 7 oz)
3pm - Fromage Frais - (ate it all)
Then at around 5ish I normally give him some tea, which in tonight's case will be Broccoli and Cauliflower Cheese. (He will generally eat most of this)
Then should I give him anything else?
Then at around 6ish he has his bottle and will take anything from around 5-7 oz
Then he will have one final bottle at around 8:30pm and again he will take about 7oz of this.
Is he getting enough? He seems happy with this.
I find that the different health visitors I see all contradict each other, which isn't all that helpful :-s
Anyway, thanks for reading this.

sounds great - the only thing i will say is that from 6-12 months they only need 17-20oz of milk a day so your little boy is getting more milk than the recommended amount. now, given he was a month early, you presumably are treating him like a 6 month old baby and assuming there is no medical reason as to why he shouldnt have less milk, then you should be ok to begin reducing his milk. you could instead of giving him the bottle at 6ish, you could give him pudding after his 5pm tea as that will obviously help in reducing his milk intake a pudding will replace the bottle and keep him filled up until his bedtime bottle.
if he is happy though, then dont worry.
Thank-You! It's reassuring to hear that I am doing things right.
So you think I should skip the tea time bottle, and instead give him a pudding?
That actually sounds better, then he may have his bedtime bottle even earlier, which means earlier to bed! :-)
Shall I keep the 8oz at all other times going?
Thanks so much for your advice!
you could try it yes and see what happens. keep his others at 8oz and when you increase his solid food, then his milk intake will reduce.
the next step i would take would be to give him solid food at 1pm as well as a bottle, but rather than 8oz reduce it down to say, 4oz - then when he takes more solid that 4oz will reduce and you can give him a pudding too and drop 1pm bottle and replaced with lunch. the yogurt at 3pm can stay as that is a nice little snack between lunch and dinner.
dont rush him though - you have to think of him as a 6 month old baby. my eldest was having 3 solid meals each followed immediately by a bottle at 6 months old (so 4 bottles a day) but she weaned at 17 weeks. by 7 months she was 3 solid meals, one with a pudding and 3 bottles. by 8 months she was 3 solid meals, puddings after lunch and dinner and only 2 bottles a day (with breakfast and one before bed).
