there is no need to rush her - my daughter was 2 yrs and 9 months before she trained and then she went dry day and night all within a week - generally the older they are, the easier it is.
the signs that they are ready is that they can tell you that they need to go to the toilet, but by far the best and most reliable sign is if she wakes up from a daytime nap and is dry. if she cannot do these things, then dont attempt it - it is far better to wait as if you start and then stop because you find she isnt ready then that can sometimes cause problems.
when you do decide she is ready, then simply ditch the nappy altogether (dont use pull ups, go straight for big girl knickers!) - as soon as she wakes up take the nappy off and do not put one back on her until she goes to bed. even if you have to go out to the shops, do not put a nappy back on her at all (take plenty of spare clothes and keep asking her if she needs to go the toilet - hence why it is important that she has the language skills to understand what you are asking her and to be able to answer).
it can take anywhere from a week to several months to get them dry during the day and usually night time takes much longer so as i say, the older they are, usually the easier it is.

oh and as for books, i personally wouldnt bother with any. the best thing is to read your child and get advice from us here - books are generic and sometimes experience from other mums is better as every child is different it will cover a wider range of scenarios.
