Travelling with your baby

flying

Hey ladies,

I am due on June 9th and as long as things go well we are planning to book a holiday for the later part of the year. I have spoken with one of my husbands friends and she took her baby away after they were a few weeks old. We are thinking of planning for September so baby will be 3 months old. Is this safe and has anyone else taken their baby on a flight? Any advice wanted thanks

the flight itself is fine it is where you are going on holiday which may pose problems for your baby - ie baby wont be used to the heat, obviuosly if you are planning to and are successful in breastfeeding then feeding baby wont be an issue but if you are bottlefeeding you need to be able to safely sterilise and make up feeds (you need to be careful about the water abroad).

Im hoping to breast feed and we have written a list to check with the travel agents that they have so we can make sure we are fully prepared. Is there anything u think i may have forgotten, with you being a mum already? We are also planning on going in september and in europe to avoid the high heats. One for baby and 2 i dont think i will be ready to be out in the heat. We are limiting it to a week and only going away for a hard year. Going to do all inclusive so its going to be nice to have a week where me and the hubby can be away somewhere nice and be bonding with our baby. Thanks for the advice

i think the list for a travel agent is a great idea. they are used to people travelling with babies so may well think of things that you dont.
also, i would add to the check list though about bottlefeeding abroad as you dont know whether breastfeeding will work out - i had every hope of breastfeeding both my children but sadly nature conspired against me both times and i was not able to.

I travelling with my son when he has 4 months and everything was fine . But I think that the best for him and safe will be when he will be done all immunizations. :)

Yes i was about to mention immunizations too. If you are going somewhere tropical then its not advised until after 4months. even the simpliest cut/bite can become infected. I remember seeking avice about getting my daughters ears pieced for her christening. and being told that in the UK no-one would do it untill after 4months. xx

I flew with my daughter when she was 16 days old - she was fine, slept the whole flight lol! We live in Germany but she was born in the UK.

We went on a holiday in the UK to get away from it all when she was five weeks (yup - we flew back) as my husband had spent the last six months of my pregnancy in Afghanistan so we had to get away, but didn't want to go out of our comfort zone with a littlie just in case she was ill or it unsettled her too much.

Plenty of people do go on holiday happily with young babies, but you might find that you don't actually want to take your child overseas at that age once they are born, when they are finally here everything changes - things you thought you'd be happy to do suddenly don't feel as comfortable.
