Can anyone help with where to put my baby in the car.
My mam has just bought a new car, and the passenger airbag can be turned off manually. The garage man told her that when cars don't have the manual option, dealers can turn the airbag of altogether. I don't really want to have my 11 week old in the back of the car when I am driving as I wont be able to see her with the seat rear facing. I have phoned all the vauxhall dealers in my area to get try and get the airbag turned off and had a different excuse from each one - one being that it is illegal to put a baby in the front seat full stop!! Another said they can't turn off the airbag cos if you have an accident the passenger can sue if the airbag is turned off.
Am i needing to buy a new car - or an old car withouts airbags - before I can go out with my baby!!!
u dont have to put a baby in the front seat to be able to see it, you can buy mirrors which attach to the headrest on the backseat or ones which stick to the window, so u can see the baby when u look in the rear view mirrow. mine is quite large so i can see all of my baby, not just her face. i wouldnt ever put my baby in the front even with the airbag turned off. x
Where did you get the mirrors from? I was in a crash with my daughter when she was 2 weeks old (We were both in the back and I haven't driven since) and would rather have her in the front so I could easily get her out if necessary.
u can get the mirrors from any baby shop - mothercare, babies r us etc.
Hi, I think what the garage man said is right cause you've got to be able to turn the airbag on/off yourself for when the seat is used by other people. It's certainly not illlegal though. I have my son in the passenger seat in my car (no airbag) and the rear seat in my husbands car cause the airbag can't be turned off. His seat fits better in the front of my car because its only small and the front seats have to be pushed as far forward as possible to fit the seat in. But if it wasn't for that I would put him in the back because having him in the front seat is a bit of a distraction as you can't help glancing a look every now and again when you should be looking at the road. i think getting the mirror is the best option. Your baby is safer in the back if you have an accident anyway. x
I picked a set of these mirrors up from argos, very reasonably priced and wouldn't be without them now with my neice so will be in the car perminantly when mine arrives
i know what your saying toni about your accident but i personally think your airbags need to be turned on and your baby in the back. because if you do happen to have another crash u have no air bag to aid you and dependent on the type of accident you may not be able to get your baby out if your airbags are off eg you whack ur head on the steering wheel and becom unconcios. im sorry if this sounds like im being harsh but im not, i just want you and your child to be safe. you can buy baby mirrors in halfords asda, sainsburys mothercare, babies r us, i hope this helps.
i think maybe you need to work on your confidence with driving again before taking you baby out so that you feel a bit better about driving before u take your child out. but thats just what i would so. im not telling you thats what you have to do.
i think kids are alot safer in the back personally, my nephew always sat in the fromt of my sisters car until she got pulled up by the police and was told that he should really be in the back for his own safty, although i dont think this is illigal, but my sister got pulled up for it so he could advise. if you get your car seat fitted from any where they will fit it in the back of your car not the front because it is safer. i
i also had a vauxhall when my daughter was born and was told that they wouldn't turn them off because my car had ones in the door and stuff so i put her in the back with the mirrors and she was fine coz she was sued to it from day one! also coz i had a three door i struggled strapping her in so bought a base with the seat.
also i'm hoping this means that when she is older she won't be one of these children who insists on being in the front!
good luck in whatever you do!x
Some cars come with airbags in the back aswell as the front, Wherever a baby is in the car, the airbag needs to be turned off because of risk of suffocation. You can switch only the passenger side off and leave the driver's airbag on!(in most cars)! I have three children, the youngest is 6months old, Since when he was born his carseat has been at the front with the passenger airbag turned off! He could have been put at the back with the girls, but then there was always that chance one of the girls could have fed him a sweetie or given him a penny with out me knowing! My girls are very loving towards there brother, but there have been times when they have given him things, to be kind, i.e a penny which could have turned into a life or death situation! I don't give them these things, but you don't know what they bring home from school / nursery! And I always explain to them what they did wrong, even though they do it out of kindness! I think it was better for me to have my baby at the front rather than the back, if he was at the back I would be constantly looking in the rearview at him, before you know it , consentration is gone and someone elses innocent child could be knocked down! Cars are dangerous wherever you are sat especially if your mind is not on the road! People shouldn't be glancing in mirrors to look at there babies, this is more of a distraction and could cause an accident! My boy will be getting a new carseat when he has outgrown this one, then he will go in the back with his sisters! Driving is like the lottery you don't know what is going to happen! We can only be cautious by wearing our seatbelts, and being alert! Some of the older cars dont have seatbelts in the back which would be safer in this case back or front of car? I was involved in an accident when I was about 10 in a car that didn't have seatbelts inthe back, it wasn't a major accident, but I came of worse than my dad that was in the front with a seatbelt! I had accident when I was in a car driven by my dad when I was younger which had seatbelts, guess what I came of worse again(sat in the back) I had a seatbelt on and my dad on both occations didn't get a single scratch on him! What I have written is just my opinion, It is up to the individual to decide where to put there chid in the car! I just think that the back of the car can be just as unsafe as the front!
that was my comment but my name didn't show, sorry that it looks like an essay! lol
I forgot to mention that all the cars I grew up with ie (the accidents) didn't have airbags! The worst I got was a broken nose!
