hand,foot and mouth disease

Hey ladies,my daughter is 19 months old and has been diagnosed with hand foot and mouth disease although the doctors were a bit unsure of what it was. They have perscribed her with a 5 day course of antibiotics and she has piriton before she goes to bed to help with the itching. However i am a bit concerned as i have researched hand, foot and mouth and there is no cure for it so no medication needed, also doctors don't tend to give antibiotics for virses. Im afraid to stop giving the antibiotics as she's been on it for 2 days now. Just wondered if anyone elses children have had it and what medication they had for it. Also how long does it take to dissapear? Thanks xxx

Oh and im 33 weeks pregnant,is it possible that il get it?

it is rare for healthy adults to get it. but if you were to get it, it is unlikely to cause any problems for the baby at all. the only slight chance is if you get it just before you give birth there is a slightly increased chance that the baby will get it, but given you are only 33 wks that is obviously. dont worry - i think you are perfectly safe.

i am not sure about the treatment for your daughter though as olivia has never caught it.

Thanks,i am waiting for the doctor to ring me as i don't think she should be on the antibiotics as it's a virus. Hopefully i won't catch it! Looks horrible,my daughter is covered and keeps itching. Glad she's got it now though rather than when baby is here x

Hiya, my 4 yo and 2 year have recently had hand, foot and mouth and I was just told to keep them away from other children to avoid passing it on but was told there's no medication just have to let it run it's course. Also I am pregnant and as Livis mummy says it's highly unlikely for adults to catch it. Hope you're little one is better soon x

My kids had this a couple of months ago. Its usually nothing to worry about, and your right about it being a virus and therefore cannot be treated with antibiotics. I used the gel stuff you can buy at the chemist for chicken pox to stop the itching. It took about a week for the spots and mouth ulcers to go. To be honest I would be thinking twice about your GP if they cannot give appropriate advice on a common childhood virus. It does sound like they wernt sure if thats what she had at all and were simply trying to cover all bases with the antibiotics and piriton.

The only thing I find odd is you say she is covered in it. The spots should be restricted to her hands feet mouth and possibly bum and genitals. If she has spots elsewhere then I would suggest that you get a second opinon. The spots are almost identical to chicken pox. When my boys had it and I went to the GP she told me that she was 'fairly sure' that it was hand foot and mouth due to the location of the spots but as the spots are so similar, if more came out on other parts of the body it would be chicken pox instead. If it was chicken pox you would need medical advice regarding your pregnancy. Please dont worry though, the chance of complications is very small but you should ask for advice anyhow x

My 3 yr old had hand foot and mouth but funnily enough only had 2 spots on 1 hand and 1 on 1 foot but his mouth was awful, so painful, he would only eat warm natural yogurt and warm water for about 10days!My dr gave me some mouth numbing gel so he was able to take some painkillers and food but apart from that nothing!! Antibiotics don't work for viruses so its pointless giving them! Good luck!

Hey ladies,my daughters spots are looking a lot better now. I did ring the doctor surgery and asked to speak to the proper doctor we normally see. He said he wouldn't of perscribed antibiotics but can see why they were givin seeing as my daughters feet were covered in spots and itching them could cause them to get infected. He said the spots can spread to to other areas so don't think it's chicken pox. Spots are not blistered now and are fading so hopefully they'll all be gone soon. Just a bit angry with the doctor for putting her on antibiotics, she has to finish the whole course of them otherwise she is at greater risk of infection. Thanks everyone for comments x
