it is normal for a baby to do that. most babies dont learn to self-soothe until they are several months old (sometimes even 6 months old).
what i did with both of mine is to cudlde them until they are just starting to get sleepy and then put them in bed so that they are tired, but still awake, but not awake enough that they dont want to go to sleep (if that makes sense!). i was lucky with both of mine (one is 4yrs and the other is 11 weeks) in that they both accepted this very quickly and learnt to self-soothe sooner than most, but i am afraid what you are experiencing is normal.
swaddling would be your best bet though, as well as putting rolled up blankets down either side of him in his basket as that can help them feel more secure.

I wasn't sure if it was normal or not, but thanks for that, I feel more reasured now. Sometimes he will just fall asleep but this is most of the time he is waking up, I will give that a go then and hopefully will get better. Also because he has a dummy, he spits it out all the time , but then get anxious and worked up again for it.

Hi my daughter is 6 weeks old tmro and im having this problem too. this twinned with colic not fun! i was abit lost too since my other daughter was amazingly easy always self soothed and slept thru practically from day one. i didnt realise how easy i had it with her!!! struggling quite alot this time its so frustrating that she wakes everytime i settle her and also does the whole spitting the dummy out even tho she wants it. iv actually stopped giving it to her when she sleeps coz i cudnt handle waking up for that too! she only gets it now when she is upset or sort of half asleep she seems to pretty much not want it when she sleeps anymore so that a relief!

Hello! My baby is 5 weeks old and is exactly the same, just will not sleep in moses basket. I ve started playing 'White Noise' for him on you tube and this does help sometimes. He is also suffering from Colic! Its great to hear I am not the only one with this problem. I am going to try the rolled up blankets at the sides :).

I put rolled up blankets in either side of his Moses basket and it's worked a treat xx

iv got a white noise cd and this really seems to help and the rolled up blankets and swaddling quite tight seems to help too she is alot better now than she has been x

hey wen my baby was that age he hated sleeping flat on his back so i was advised to roll up blankets down the sides and just roll him slightly on to his side (not all the way tho just a lil bit) and it worked a treat :) he still sleeps on his side now at 8 months except he can do it himself now :) xx
