Routines for preemies

I have read CLB and a couple of other books, also one about preemie babies that says you shouldn't try to put preemie babies into a routine as they need to be fed when they are hungry, not on a fixed routine.

My baby was born on 16th Jan, although she was due on 22nd Mar. She came home on 3rd Mar. She feeds fairly regularly at 4hr intervals now.

Has anyone here used routines for their preemie and do you have any advice?

Thanks
Jane

my baby was born at 36 weeks and 3 days and was in special care for 2 weeks weighing 4lb13 and he was not feeding. before he came home from hospital he was going 4 hours between feeds now he is home he only goes 2 hours between feeds and its really difficult during the night. i am not sure why his routine changed and when will he change?

Hi

i had the same thing with my little girl had to wake her every 4hrs for a feed but a week later everything changed went every 2-3hrs i was told prem babys need to go every 2-3hrs to catch up as they need to get to a normal baby weight ie 7-8lb once hope started to gain weight when she was about 5 weeks she started to level out on her weight gain and go longer between feeds she started sleeping through when she was 12wks onwards just persist i know its hard but they go lobger eventually

my son was born at 33+6 he spent 14 days in scub. In hospital he would go 4-5 hourly then i brought him home he would only go 2 hourly he is now 8 weeks today and it is getting better ... so hopefully as they catch up they will get into a routine a bit more at nite he will 4-5 hourly on a good nite which isnt bad in my eyes..

My son was born at 36 plus 5 weighing a good 7lb 10oz! One of the above posts say they feed a lot to catch up so I dont know if it would apply to him as he was big anyway. He is now nearly 7 weeks and he is settling down now but to start with he was a nightmare. He would take an hour to feed and then wake an hour later for another feed and this went on all day and all night and we were so tired. Now his night time is sorted. He has 7oz at 6 and 7oz at 8. Goes to bed at 9ish til 2.Has about 4oz then wakes again at 5ish for another4oz and then cries to get up at about 7.30 and feeds about 8.15.

Hi

My little girl was only only 3lb 15oz when she came home at 3 months old so we stuck with 3 hourly feeds as she never cried for them.

hi there i had my daughter at 32+4 & she weighed 5lb 3oz (nice weight) so that went on her side when it came to feeding ! She was poorly the first 24-36hrs , then she had tube feeds & i started introducing breast on day 2 fair enough she just nuzzled & didnt feed but it got us off to good start & by day 6 she was having 2 5-10min feeds a day ! then i went into stay with her on day 9 , she fed solely on the breast for 48hrs only lost 10g so we were let out on day 11 !! YIPPEEE !! the first 48hrs i was constantly feeding every 1.5-2 hrs but she has now settled & is going every 3hrs occassionally 4 , i dont wake her up i feed when she is hungry , i've only had to wake her up once !! She is doing really well , she will be 3wks old on friday (27th july) and is putting weight on well !! And she chose her own routine .... i dont force food down her she wouldnt let me anyway , i hated watching the tube feeds at hospital :(

I had 36+2 twin boys and found that I had to put tem in a routine as they rarely woke up for feeds, this carried on for about 6 weeks and they eventually carred on the rotine on their own. They are now 15 weeks and both over 13lbs so it has done them no harm at all, also I think the routine give me peace of mind too that they were eating enough etc, in my eyes it was the best thing too do.

I had my son at 35wks, He was in SCBU for just 5 days, and I was told to feed him every 3 hours. He weihed 4lb 11 when born. When we got him home, same as what seems to be happening to the other mums on this post, is he was wanting feeds every 2 hours, sometimes 1 hour! He never seemed to be satisfied, and I was completely exhausted - the mums that complained when there babies were going 4 hours made me laugh! We perservered and I really naughtily put him on hungry baby food for a couple of wks until HV told me off, but it really helped him gain weight and go longer. At 6 weeks he was 9lb 12oz, he is now 8 weeks and due to be weighed thurs, I think he must be 11lb now, so has apparently grown a bit more than average. The nightime is much better. I still feed every 3-4hours, but he goes 4 hours through the night now which is great, I don't mind 3 hours in the day.

I have read through all the posts on prem babies. I found them really reassuring, especially knowing that its normal for them to stop having to be woken for feeds and start going 1.5 - 2 hourly between feeds for a bit. I have an older daughter aged 22 months who also doesn't sleep through the night so i am completely worn out. My baby is 3 weeks today and the nights are really taking there toll now! How long before prem babies ... mine was 5 weeks early... sleep for longer?
