Being induced at 38weeks, estimated 5lbs 5 birthweight

Hey there,
My baby is plotting on the very bottom of normal on her growth chart. The doctors are happy with how she is doing just as long as she doesnt drop in weight.
Im concerned because if I was to go full term she would weigh approx 6lbs 3 but they estimate that at 38weeks she will probably only weigh 5lbs 5.
I am worried that although she wont be classed as premature, she will need extra care because of her low weight.
Has anyone had any similar experiences? Could you offer advice or give me an idea of what to expect?
I dont smoke, drink or take drugs so these are not a factor in her size.
Thank you xx

can i be cheeky and ask why you are being induced at 38 weeks is it because of how small baby is because when i had my lil girl they kept telling me i was going to have a big baby and wanted to induce me early because of how big she was but i went just over 38 weeks and she wasnt excatly a big baby she was only 6lb 10oz

not cheeky at all, i should have probably specified!
its not necessarily due to her size, if i went full term she would be approx 6lbs 3. im still being terribly sick (28weeks now) but again they dont think thats affecting her growth.
its mainly because i suffer from faints and fits but im not epileptic. the doctor basically want to get her out as soon as possible to eliminate the possibility of me hurting her if i faint. we didnt realise how small she was going to be when this was initially discussed though.

hi m best friend had her baby full time 40 weeks and she weighed onl 4lb 6oz,she was ver active and fine, not a s greedy oviously as a bigger baby but still ok,i think at 38 weeks lungs heart intestines etc are fully developed so dont worry too much, its not actually the weight its more on weeks, ive another pal who had her baby at 33 weeks and he weighed 8lb but he was still quite ill as his lungs hadnt developed due to him being early, talk to the midwifes and docs im sure they will reassure you, take care

hey i had my baby 2 weeks late the day before i was ment to be induced, she was only 5lb 5 when she was born, she was healthy but they wanted me to stay in a few days with her to do some tests and make sure she was getting enough milk, she was fine and we got out after 3 days! she is 3 months old now and thriving, weighs 11lb now, smaller baby's tend to feed more and catch up quite quickly so don't worry i'm sure everything will be just fine (: xx

im 38 weeks now and had a growth scan last week, my babies weight is 5lb 5 the sonographer said that was nothing to worry about and so did the midwife, are you anaemic? or have low iron?

hi im 37 weeks now and been having regular scans from 20 weeks to monitor my babys growth as they said he was small and plotting low on the chart also. i was very worried about this until 3 weeks ago when we went for another scan and hed had a growth spurt and now they are saying his size is fine n weighs now about 6lb 5oz so hopefully your baby will have a growth spurt. x

Hi,
They expected me to have a big baby and was told that she would be big! However, i went 11days over, had to be induced and she only weighed 6lb 6oz! And the hospital i had her in (i was sent to another hospital as there were no beds in my chosen one!) really think that my dates were totally wrong anyway as she was pretty small, overdue babies tend to be dry and she wasnt and she was still covered in all the white stuff that they lose if overdue!! And also she was very grey!!! But never mind, all happy and healthy!! Baby will be fine hun born at that weight!! My niece was 4lb 6oz and was 8weeks early but was home after 3weeks and weighed 5lb 5oz!!!

Hi there, i don't know if i can help but i had a low birth weight baby 11 weeks ago. I had regular monitering and was told that the baby was an IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction) baby. There are a number of reasons this can happen and is not something that you would have done and in my case the placenta wasn't working as it should. It could be worth asking if this is what they are talking about as they never really explained this to me until the end of my pregnancy.

I was then taken in a 38 weeks for a c section as the baby had stopped growing and she weighed in at 4lb! The reason i am telling you this is because my little one although incredibly tiny was born perfectly healthy. She did not get taking into the special care baby unit. We were in the post natal ward for 2 days where she was by my side the whole time and they were so happy with how well she was doing we were then discharged. It was hard work in one respect as she needed constant feeding and i had to feed her from a preemie baby cup for the first couple of weeks but she has had a real fuss made of her and it makes her extra special in my eyes lol. She is thriving now, and has doubled her weight in 10 weeks. I was never going to have a big baby as i'm only 5ft tall so some of this is down to genetics also.

Make sure you get properly monitered and don't worry about having a small baby as they can be perfectly healthy and beautiful, my little one is proof of that.

Please let us know how you get on, am sure all will be well as worried as you must feel right now. If you fancy a chat just holler xxx
