Feeding problems and questionsfeeding problems sick after feed
my baby is 4 weeks old, she started finishing 3oz bottles the other week and the midwife said to start giving her 4oz. she really glugs the milk down, taking it to quickly sometimes. but then she is sicking up milk afterwards as if she has taken too much milk and crying if she then get tummy upset. what to do? do i try her on the hungrier baby milk? or is this normal?
no, she does not need hungry baby milk. hbm is for babies who are older and who are finishing full 8/9oz bottles and then crying for more immediately or only going 1-2 hours before wanting more. it is used to stop the need to wean early. your situation is totally different and giving hungry baby milk may well be detrimental to her calorie intake at this stage.
it is normal for a baby to bring milk back if they take too much - it is why it is impossible to overfeed them - they simply throw up what they dont need. even though she is finishing 3oz it may be quite some time before she is ready for 4oz. my baby (my 2nd child) is 10 weeks old and has been on 6oz bottles for weeks now. she totally drains them but if i make her a 7oz she is sick on the last bit. i just watch for signs that 6oz is not enough, ie once she has had a feed if her little tongue keeps going i put her dummy in - if she settles on the dummy i know that 6oz is enough and that she just wanted to suck more but not need more milk. as soon as i try that and she cries and doesnt want the dummy then i know that she does want more milk hence i'll start to make a 7oz bottle for her. even then though, 7oz may be too much but 6.5oz may well be enough. also if she starts to want to feed more often then that can also be a sign that another oz needs to be added to the bottle (not always though!).
for the moment it just sounds like 3oz is just enough for her. keep a close eye on it and see how she goes. the other thing you could do is make a 4oz bottle but stop her at 3oz and then just gauge whether she really is still hungry for the last little bit or whether she is content after the 3oz in which case dont give the last oz to her.
hope that helps
