General baby healthWeight Charts used by Health Visitor
Hi Guys
My little girl was born three weeks early, weighing 5 lb 5oz. She has always gained weight, and now aged 6 months weighs 14lb 7oz. She is a plump little thing, eats everything, loves her milk, sleeps thru the night, is happy and content.
sound ok so far?? I would say so, but not my HV - she wants her to put on more weight to bring her above the line on her chart and bring her more into line with the "average baby". She questioned how many times a day she had solids, how much milk she drank, whether she woke in the night hungry. By the time I had been quizzed in front of other mums who were present in the clinic, I felt like I had been accused of starving her.
When they plotted her first weight on the chart they put it at the point of due date, when I questioned why that had been done they said that is what they do. As she was three weeks early, I think she should have been started from 37 weeks. And surely as anyone looking at my babe can see she looks healthy and happy, did I really deserve such an earbashing from her?? She made me feel really guilty and awful, to the point where I don't want to attend the clinic any more.
Has anyone else had this with their HV? What does everyone else think about these charts? If she wasn't putting on weight far enough, I really feel down over the whole thing
Well yes i agree she was a bit harsh the way she spoke to you,and i cant blame for being upset.
The blue line is only an average or guide line,my eldest was always below the line but no one was worried as he is so active, even now is he tall and thin, where as my other one is slightly above the line, but both my children ate well but are different,
Another way to tell is by the clothes, does she wear her age????
From what you have said she sounds a good little girl and at the end of the day you are her mum and you would be the first to no if there was anything wrong so i wouldnt worry to much as all children come in different shapes and sizes.as long as she is putting weight on and feeding and sleeping then i wouldnt worry but please let us no how you are getting on xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
hiya hun, i do think your hv was being a bit harsh.
my son was born at 37weeks and ive always questioned why they started plotting his weight at the EDD!!! really its easy maths and obviously your baby is going to weigh a little less than a full term baby.but anything from 37 weeks is classes as full term!!
although joshua was born at 37 weeks he was 8lb15oz so quite above average!
at the age of one and being so aktive he has gone down a few centiles!
i think the chart is a good guidline
if your lil girl seem happy and is gaining weight at a right speed then dont worry about it hun tell her you think your babys is doing uite well actually!!
good luck hun
hiya, hv are never happy, my son was born at 8lb 1.5oz and now is 4months old and already weighing 14lb, she commented that he was over weight but yet hes on his line ? grr hvs
Hannah was wearing 6-9 month clothes by the times she was 5 1/2 months old. I dug out my sons chart. He was born 10 days early and by the same age he was 17lb. As hannah was 3 weeks early I'd say she is about right.
I hate the fact that the HV made me feel so guilty. I know they are there to help us, but at this moment in time I feel she has pushed me away. I am not keen on returning to the clinic at all.
Hi my son was born at 34 +4 so 5 1/2 weeks early. His weight is plotted frmo 5 weeks before the EDD line. He was born 5lb10oz and now at 12 weeks is 10lb 10oz. He sits just below the average line on te chart. He has lost a bit of weight one week butput it on the next. My HV (who seems pretty good compared to some) has always said as long as he generally gains weight its fine. They also said they would only really consider worrying about his weight if he started crossing those lines. My son has only just gone into 0-3 months clothes so sounds like you little girl is doing really well. I have always been told by HV and Doc as long as they are gaining weight not to worry. As for the baby clinic is there perhaps another one in your area you could go to. Or perhaps you could request to see another HV for a second opinion.
I am a firm beleiver of you know your baby best and if you are happy that she is well and content try not to worry. Sometimes HVs just get a bit carried away I think with what is written in a book and not on individuals.

Hi. My little girl was born 8 weeks early weighing 3lb 12oz and the health visitor went by her corrected age (8 weeks behind her due date) when plotting her weight on the chart until she was a year old. As far as I know, this is standard practice until they turn 1, otherwise premature babies are always going to look underweight.
sorry for speaking my mind but ur hv is an idiot as long as ur lil one is gaining weight at a steady pace a long a similar line even if it is just under she is still putting weight she seems to forget she was prem most hv do if ur lil one was hungry or not happy she would tell u listen to ur heart n ur lil one n dont let ur hv rule u ur the mum not her
As long as they are staying on similar lines on the chart and are in proportion with all the measurements I don't think it matters. My son is 17lb at 4 months so is very heavy but HV said all his other measurements are in proportion so he's fine. He was 9lb 12.5oz to start with so I think they have to take into account the weight they were when they were born
my eldest son has all way been below t average chart line but my 5month old is above the average line! i hate the word average! we mums are all different shapes n sizes and so are babies! aslong as shes drinking n eating plenty then the hv can go swivel! as long as she puttin on weight then y shud t hv be so harsh n in my eyes rude to u! they r there for advise to help us mums not to be rude to u who feeds ur baby good food n gives plenty of milk! if it were me id go to t clinic n c another hv n if they ask y say that hv only likes babies who r average not all babies who r wat they r why should we all b average! try not to let it get to u i know its hard cos it upsets u but show her ur bigger than her n u r doing t best for mur baby n no she not average shes normal if that makes sens!
My Baby was born 2 weeks early at 5lb 6oz when my midwife was visiting for the 1st few weeks they were really helpful. Then my HV started coming and told me my son needed 2 be woken up 4 feeds I explained that there was no way of waking him 4 feeds and that I had tried which she was not pleased about. I only took my son a couple of times 2 the hv as I was told I would hav 2 go every 2 weeks till he got 2 the blue line which as they had put his start weight on the edd point was always going 2 be below it. My son is now nearly 7 months old but very happy and will eat anything so i would stop going! there is no need 4 her 2 be rude and I am sure u no whats best 4 ur baby. xx
