General baby healthMore wet nappies then dirty nappies? is this normal?
Hi, i have a new baby daughter who will be a month old on saturday. She was born 2 weeks late and her weight was 8IBS 10ozs she didnt loose much in her check up the next week which suprised the midwife because apparently all new borns loose half their birth weight in first week then put it back on. She was weighed out at 8IBS 7ozs, the following week she was weighed again and she went up in weight. The week after however she starte dlossing weight the midwife said because of this she was holding onto her remaining weight like a reserve in emergency, all she seems to do now is wet nappies, im breastfeeding her and i am satrting to think its me thats the problem but why isnt she doing any dirty nappies and all wet ones. Can anyone help or has anyone been through the same thing, im a young mum with my first baby and i am starting to get down about it
i havea 4 month old daughter who is also breast fed, she never lost any weight at the start, most lose some, but only a few ounces, not half their birth weight. Also, breast milk only contains what baby needs meaning there is very little waste so it is perfectly normal to get very few dirty nappies, as long as she has lots of wet nappies this means she is getting all she needs. my daughter goes for over a week without a poo!! dont worry about it and dont give up, breast fed babies dont tend to put on weight as quickly as bottle fed babies, but this is good as they are less likely to become over weight. I have a very good health visitor who warned me about this before it happened!! hope this puts your mind at rest xx emma
My son was born weighing 8lb 7oz and he never lost any weight.
Hi
My little one is 9 weeks old tomorrow and she is totally breastfed to. She only poos once or twice a week and the HV assures me this is normal (but try telling that to well meaning relatives!). She did lose some weight after she was born but she is piling it on now - she already weighs 12lb 9oz which freaked me out but the HV says that is absolutely fine!
Joey was breastfed and his weight peaked and flowed, it would go gradually then suddenly drop and it did that until about3/4 months when i weaned him off me.
I only expected one dirty nappy or two a day, but if she aint passing any at all, may be best to phone health visitor or midwife as they would know xx
Hi
I agree with the other messages too. I breastfeed my daughter and she'll be 12 weeks old tomorrow. In the early weeks she had lots of dirty nappies which then stopped and I worred too, but my HV told me that becuase breastmilk is so easily digested by the baby there is so little waste that the baby can go 7 days between dirty nappies. She told me that as long as the baby has at least 5 wet nappies a day, then the baby is getting lots of milk and nourishment and told me not to worry, after all, it must be going in, to be coming out.
As with one of the other messages, I was told that weight gain in a breast fed baby can fluctuate with an average of 5ox-8oz a week in weight gain.
I'm a first time mum too and it's so easy to blame yourself for the little things or when something happens that hasn't happened before, but you should believe in this - you are doing an amazing job breastfeeding your baby and you're not the problem. Keep at it - it is a new skill for you and your baby to learn.
All the best

I have a problem with my son who is just coming upto 10 weeks old. He has had a problem with not a lot of dirty nappies since about two weeks. Dr says it's a slow bowel that causes the problem and has advised me to give him a small amount of honey in water between feeds instead of just water or as well as water. The honey makes things pass threw a bit easier. It works sometimes but isn't at the moment. Once they get a bit older their bowels should mature and make them fill their nappies more often (so I'm told).
Hi
Just to say i'm still breast-feeding my baby at 7 months and she still doesn't do that many poos.
At the beginning she used to go once a week and like the other mums have said my hv told me this was fine. Also she didn't lose weight at the beginning, and her weight went up rapidly then started to slow down.
Hopes this helps.

My wee girl is coming up for 4 months, but since we changed her milk to cow & Gate premium from sma gold she has had explosive nappies, some times 4 in a day or none at all. I am told this is normal but she cry's with pain before and after and has always got traped wind. She is taking Colief drops for colic but Im just not sure what to do?. I thought it was supossed to ease off as the got older.
Hi,
My daughter has just turned 4 months. To begin with she put on a pound a fortnight but i got her weighed 2-3 weeks ago she was 12 pounds 13.5 ounces and got her weighed last week she only weighs 14 pounds. I am told by the hv because i'm breastfeeding babies don't put on as much weight. As for the dirty nappies, i have been so distressed as my baby went everyday when she was born then it went 3-4 days. She went on her 10th day but i took her to the doctors, she gave me supositories if need be but to give her apples/pears. My hv has told me twice that breastfeed babies don't go all the time due to it being milk it isn't food. I give my girl prune juice with water, it seems to work but was advised not to try apples etc as she's only 4 months (by the hv). I'm glad i read this as it's reassured me. Hope your feeling ok!!
