General baby healthHealth visit, not what I thought it would be
Hi there. I wasn't really sure what to expect from my sons 8mth health check with health visitor. However, once we were in, I spent the time getting him undressed then dressed again for weighing - and that was it, appointment over. Whilst changing him, I was asked can he sit/crawl, can he eat lumps, can he pick things up, has he any teeth, does he sleep ok? All yes or no answers. We were then given a book bag and went on our way. I think I may have been asked if everything was ok. Well yes it is as far as I know!! I'm a first time mum so my son and me are learning together. We go with the flow and take each day as it comes.
The appointment just wasn't what I thouhgt it would be (not that i knew what i expected either!!). I don't even think she looked at my son, we had our back to her cause I was dressing him. Is that all I should have expected?
Thanks for reading
im affraid so its just all routine stuff i felt like this with my first and that was 7 years ago so it must not have changed much !! dont worry about it as long as you and babyare happy and the hv is getting to fill her forms in x x
Hi
It disgusts me, I dont think its all the HV fault, lack of funding etc.
My daughter is 8 months on Thursday, and we haven't been invited to our 8 month check up yet. I feel that without this site and my partner I would have gone mad, literally.
I have had real problem weaning my baby, she is really good but I lack confidence in weaning. I know she is a happy healthy baby, but I would like a HV to give me support. I used to go to a breast feeding group, but through lack of HV's, it had to be cancelled. I wouldn't have been able to breast feed exclusively without it.
Also, if the HV bothered to look at your baby and threrefore others, they may be able to stop little babies suffering if they seen any bruises etc.
X
HI sweet
in my area you dont even get 8mth check i did with my others but not my 4th. lack of
funding.
i had a girl who prob just left school when my 3rd child had 3yr check telling me about
safety in the home (sorry to disrespect) telling me about safety in the home and
about feeding as he was my 3rd i had hoped i would know that by then.
i think its all gone out the window which is really bad as these are about childrens
lives.
i agree with kat and dan they should be checking babys properly though most of us
look after our babies properly but some dont do they.
my baby prob wont get checked till he is about 18mths very bad as its a big
gap between 6wk check and 18mths!
my actual hv is lovely and respects me and doesnt talk down to me but i hardly ever
getto see her now.
hugs xxx
hi hun, ive had a total different experience.
my son had his 8month check and the health visitor came out to our house, weighed him, measured him, checked his hips, checked if he was crawling, walking properly, checked his eye sight by getting him to pick things up like raisins, little beads and watch his hand to mouth movements.
she also did a test on me to check whether i had post natal depression.
if you are not happy or want to discuss any other worries, concerns with your health visitor then give her a call and speak to her!
hiya i think my daughter was 9 months old when her appointment came through for the 8 month check,i havnt seen a great deal of my hv,the first visit she sent a student round as she was busy so it wasnt the best start in my book, anyhow when i met her she did say sorry and is nice the few times i have met her,i used to take my daughter to the health center to get weighed every week and was told if i needed to see her i could wait as she attended the weigh ins and sat in her office in case any mums wanted to chat,i did go in once and only waiting 5 mins, even though i havnt seen much of her i know that she is on the end of the phone if i needed advise or she would be at the health center twicw a week, she also set up a weaning group that i went to when jess was 4 months old so that really helped me,you know i just thought evrey hv did the same you think they would, the check at 9 months was similar to loubirds, where she wanted to see for herself what jess did like crawl, stand up,did a test with beads and i too got the pnd test,im guessing it really does depend on your hv then i just thought they would all be told to do the same thing,if you arent happy i would def suggest you ring her and talk to her jo x
me again, like JO
i go to a baby group a few times a week and the hv is there every monday for the weighing clinic if its not my hv then i will talk to the one there and she will leave a note with my hv.
i think its a shame that the care from hv and midwives isnt as good as it perhaps should be.they should and probably all do have a method that they should all follow and the 8 month check is meant to check the development, discuss health and safety, not just the weight and ask a few questions.
Thanks for your replies. I think I was probably expecting something a bit more thorough and although it was an 8mth check he was nearly 9mths. I, like Kat_and_Dan, have found this site way more helpful, friendly and full of some great advice. I know you can contact your health visitor for advice, but with some of our meetings you always feel on the clock or that you're just an over anxious mum. I think I will continue to use this site for a long time yet!!
