constipation in newborn babies

Hi, my son is now 5 weeks ols and has been having constipation since he was just under 2 weeks old. I have tried loads of things what other people have recommended including the doctors like cooled boiled water on its own, with orange juice, prune juice and brown sugar but nothing seems to be helping. He has had to have suppositories which seems to be the only thing helping and im worried that he is relying on us to help him go now. Has anyone else had the same problem or have any other ways to help him as the doctors dont seem that interested. Its heartbreaking watching him struggle when you have tried all you can to help

hi, my daughter was constipated and dident poo for 8 days, the hv said to try reflexology which to my amazment worked there and then. to do the reflexology you need to lye your lo down take of nappy, then you need to use your thumb and do clockwise circle movements on the middle of the left foot first (this will work the small intestines) and then the same on the right foot (large intestines)your lo will most defo cry , but dont worry its wont beb becaus eyou are hurting him it is just because the blockage is moving through/ it may take a few times but it does work. hope that helped.

I gave my daughter gripe water, and by the morning her bowels had moved. I was so relieved, because nothing else worked. I was told not to give gripe water before 4weeks, but was desperate.

Hi Debbie, my son had the same problem and a little trick I was shown whilst he was in SCBU was to lie him on his back and 'pedel' his legs in the air like he's riding a tiny bike! Do it a few times a day. It's worth a try as it won't harm or hurt your baby. My lad is 13wks now and his bowel problems stopped when he was about 8wks. Keep a camera handy for the pure comedy value, but I promise you that I'm not winding you up! :-)

Hi,
I had to change my sons formula milk. He had colic for 4 months and I used to give him cow and gate comfort which just didnt agree with him, changed to Aptamil (for formula fed babies I highly reccomend) and we never had a problem again otherwise all of the above cycling legs, baby massage etc x

my son when he was born had the same propblem up until he was 15 week we tried everything possible and i mean everything to make him try to go, he had visits to the doctor nearly every other day and they couldnt think of n e thing else and just said it has to come out sometime so i just waited still trying to do what i could until he turned blue one day and stopped breathing he was rush to hospital and they got him breathing and put through 16oz of water staight into his system which flushed him all out and i have never seen so much pooh in my life! it turned out he had a nasty bowel infection and was in hosp for a week while he was on a drip and they told me if it had been 10 more mins he wouldnt be here today (now 2yr7months) i hope it dont scare you but it was the worsed day of my life and i wouldnt wish that on any one so if the doctors wont do any thing or cant think of what else to do or he still dont start going properly maybe see if they can do any tests x
