Mens Antenatal classes!

Hi!

I'm a second year midwifery student doing a parent education module.

For my assignment we have to identify a target population, identify and health need and address this. I am focusing on the partners of pregnant women, and want to formulate a set of classes (workshop) aimed primarily at men, to help reduce the rates of female/male postnatal depression.

I was wondering what it would take to encourage your men to go to an antenatal class alone? What sort of activities would they enjoy? (money no object)

Any help you provide would be fantastic!

Thanks very much!

Hi Hannah
well, to be totally truthful and having just asked my partner, he would not attend alone, he'd rather we did things together given that we made our baby together. i explained to him that it was for your assignment and he could not come up with anything that would encourage him to go to that kind of thing alone
however, assuming men would go alone, i think that something that focuses on the early days/weeks of life with a newborn would be useful. we actually went to a workshop which for a large portion of it was helping the man as birthing partner and how to support during labour, but there was very little on how to support in the early days/week after birth. i know my partner felt very unsure of himself and he was constantly questioning himself whereas if there was something to show them the basics and practical things - how to change a nappy, bathe a baby - that would have gone a long way to helping him feel more confident.
hope that helps you (sorry i couldnt get a better response from my other half!)
