Childcarenearly 18 months and still blending some foods!
Hi, my son is nearly 18 months and generally eats quite well. He can eat sausages and fushfingers cut up small, most finger foods, and what I would call normal food. However he won't eat a roast dinner for example, unless I blend it down. If I mush it right down he will eat it, the same with beef stews or shepherd pie. He eats spagetti bolognaise, but again i puree the mince a little then just chop the spagetti. I know at his age I shouldnt be doing this, but if it means he will eat it, should I carry on? Getting worried about it all now. He also doesn't self feed yet, but he is doing the odd few spoonfuls of his breakfast. Is this all really bad?
Personally I don't think this is bad. . .as long as you know that he CAN eat normal food and that he does eat some foods without it being blended the why shouldn't you blend the foods together that he likes?? for example. .when I eat ice cream, I whisk it up until it is all soft . .is that bad? . . I wouldn't do it in public mind ;p
If you feel bad for doing it then you could wean him off the blended things by not blending them so much, then less and less until they are "normal"?
IF he does the odd few spoonfulls at breakfast, then again, you know that he CAN do it so just encourage him to do these few (tell him how clever he is) and when he is ready he will eat the full bowl! . .I don't believe in forcing them., . .they aren't going to want you to feed them forever so as long as you know that he can do it then you have nothing to worry about .. .he's just lazy like every other man in this world ;p
I don't think you need to worry either - my son is 15 months and won't feed himself ANYTHING lol I even have to feed him finger food myself! I agree with Lea about blending slightly less and doing it gradually, thats how my son went from purees to lumpy foods.
I read somewhere that most children aren't capable of feeding themselves with a spoon until they are 18 months (to do with coordination I think) and I'm sure that my daughter was around that age when she started to use a spoon herself and it was a bit hit and miss even then!
So I wouldn't worry, as long as he's eating it that's the main thing and he'll get there in the end :-))xx
Thank you so much. He can be lazy, for example I have to feed him his sandwiches sometimes, but he can do it but just chooses not to. He eats beans on toast, and other foods, but won't really eat meat or veg unless blended. Some of his eating habits could be my fault, as I like to prepare foods and freeze them for ease, so he pribably hasn't had enough goes eating freshly cooked food in their normal form. He eats pasta chopped and rice with sauces. What other meals do your lo's eat, and do you just chop all their food . X
Sorry can't type today, I blame my phone!
My son eats everything we eat . .My OH is a bit of a health freak (he's a personal trainer by trade) so everything is cooked from fresh (he does most of the cooking. . .I'll probably do 1 meal a week ;p) and we don't add salt so basically everything
curry, stew, salad, he loves boiled potatoes tossed in butter and mint!, pizza, hotpot, bolognaise, chilli, pasta with what ever sauce, sandwiches, beans on toast, brocolli and cheese tart, quiche (that is basically whatever we have in the fridge, in a pastry case covered in egg), meat and 2 veg and his favourite. . .Lamb Sunday dinner!
YES, we chop up all his food in to bite size pieces (apart from toast and cheese straws) because the rest he just tries to put it all in!!! . .We don't feed him any of his meals apart from his breakfast and the messy meals if he is wearing something nice LOL. .if he can't be bothered to use his spoon/fork then he uses his hands!!. . .he wont go hungry. . .he'll find one way or another to get it down him (he has even been known to pick his bowl up and lick it out)!!!
xx
