BreastfeedingBreastfeeding worries!!
Hey my son is six weeks old and I'm breastfeeding, Im just looking for some reassurance on the matter!!! :) he'll eat for about 30-40 mins each feed then an hour break at max in between. I understand at first this is normal but I'm wondering will this gradually decrease I'm finding it very tiring and worried I'm maybe doing something wrong??!! He's had excellent weight gain and sleeps the night with just one wake up. Thanks in advance for advice comments :)
have you tried to pump of some milk and then after his hour brake you can just give him the bottle and save yourself some energy i had to do this with my daughter i would express a few bottles and put it in breastfeeding bags and freeze it just so that i could get a little bit of help. i didnt want to d this but it was the only way to feel like i was doing everything ok x
My son did the same, it was so tiring! He is 17 weeks now and has 5 feeds a day with about 3 hours in between feeds, and he sleeps through. It does get better, I think I saw a dramatic improvement at about 8 weeks, so you haven't got long, just stick it out. Eventually you will get a little routine going, instead of spending your whole day feeding! When my son was first born sometimes he would feed for an hour and a half lol!! Now he does 10 mins each side and a long feed before bed, but that is because he falls asleep whilst feeding. Good luck and keep up the hard work! x
Well done for sticking with it... I caved in after 3 weeks as I couldn't cope with the constant feeding! It turned out that my diet was sufficient to provide quality milk [I didn't eat enough] which is why he was so hungry all the time... other than that I can't give any other advice :-) Good luck, I wish i'd stuck it out longer xxx
Hi Cat
Make sure you eat often yourself and fill up on really filling homecooked meals like stews and casseroles, lots of fruit and veg etc. I breastfed my baby boy and had the same issues early on as I wasn't eating a lot, and the stuff I was eating wasn't providing him with breastmilk of any substance. As soon as I became more aware of looking after myself and not just him, the feeding got much easier.
He is 1 next Saturday and I breastfed him until about 8 months when he decided himself that he didn't want it anymore, so I moved on to bottles with him. Enjoy every moment as I didn't realise how much I enjoyed it until I stopped!
Hi! My little girl did this and it all started to settle after a few months. It is hard work but when you can, sit down with a snack, a cuppa and a DVD to feed him. It's easier if you have something at hand and relaxed then it won't seem as tiring, as you can relax whilst you're doing it. You are doing really well and should be so proud of yourself! Gail
Hi,
My son did exactly the same from around 6 weeks, at about 7 weeks it was every hour and a half day and night!!
Just stick with it . . it soon gets better, my son settled down again at about 8 weeks (3 hours through the day and a 5 hour stretch at night) . . i think it may just be a growth spurt as now my son is 4 months old (feeds 4 hours through the day and sleeps 8 hours at night) but every now and a again he may have a day or two where he decides to feed more often.
As the other posts say, make sure you eat well as this makes it a lot easier (cook in bulk and then you can just warm it up), have what i called PJ days . . line up the DVD's stay in your comfy clothes/pj's, food at the ready and just relax (nap in between if you can)
The time in between feeds WILL increase and you should be really proud of yourself for sticking at it!!
I don't think you are doing anything wrong but if you are worried you should go see the health visitor.
Take care x
Hi,

Hi
i have a 6wk old girl and have had the same problem ..and my baby wasnt putting on weight so she advised me to give one bottle of formulae milk as atop up every day. This was a life saver as my little girl has one 2- 3 hr nap during the day which gives me time to recuperate - I am trying know to wean her of the bottle as i prefer to breastfeed enjoy it while u can they grow up so quickly and those precious close moments will not last long unfortunately - well done kep it up
babies do start to go longer between feeds as they get older and more curious of other things going on. i gave my breastfeed baby one feed of formula just to get her to go longer i started this at 4 months and gradually swapped every feed for a bottle until she was weaned off the breast by 8 months by doing this i do feel i stopped early but i couldnt bare the thought of her being clingy and hard to stop
Hiya, I've been reading all the other comments about how long your baby feeds for, My little one feeds for 20mins on each breast every 2/3 hrs I sometimes worry, is she having enough feeds...is it normal, she's had a steady weight gain...I also feel should I mix bottle and breast? can someone advise me Tks
