Milk or little milk?

I seem to have loads of milk at night - I get over engorged - probably because Thomas only does one feed in night but during the day my boobs never feel full and Thomas feeds every 2 or 3 hours. Is anyone else finding this? Is there anything I can do to produce more milk during the day. I am drinking plenty of water and eat well....Help!

hello i have only just stopped breast feeding and my baby girl is 9months old.I found at the begining of breast feeding,my boobs didnt feel full during the day as she also fed every hour or 2,but at night they felt full once she had given them a chance to "catch up",this is very normal, and does not mean that you arent producing enough during the day. There is no evidence that what you eat or drink(or the amount you drink) has anything to do with your milk production ,and neither is there any truth in the old wives tale that to make milk you have to drink milk...if that were the case, cows wouldnt make milk! i found all this out from the le leche league as i thought my milk had dried up as my boobs didnt feel full at all after 5months of feeding, that is normal once breast feeding has been established for so long.Try not to worry,im sure you are satisfying your baby with the amount of milk you have, some babies like yours (and mine) just like to feed little and often. do try the LLL if you have any questions that you cant find answers to,they were a great help to me,and helped keep me breast feeding for the 9months.
Good luck,and enjoy!

My little seems content most times after feeding, also i know she wouldnt sleep if she wasnt full and would cry which she hardly does, but you cant help but worry i suppose.Maybe it is like bublish says they just like little but often didnt think of that one!!!
The problem is not knowing when she wants to be fed next if she doesnt have a good feed, do you find that??how old is your little boy??is he your first??

Hia, yes he is my first - he is only 6 weeks old, I suppose thats why Im worrying. He used to go 8 hours in the night to his feed, now its 6 hours at the most and during the day it was 4 or 5 hours now its 2 or 3 - it just seems to be very strange that he has changed so much! Health visitor just keep on saying dont worry just continue what youre doing - but Im just not sure...

Id like to keep on breast feeding till as late as possible - but will go onto bottle if I have to. Also I cant get enough milk to express either which is really annoying!

hey..i think you worry no matter how many you have although with your first you are alot more worried i do have to agree....do you think it could maybe be a growth spurt??they tend to take more milk when they go through one? If he is putting weight on then they will say that cos its obvious he is getting enough milk...but they arent the ones having to feed all the time, so sometimes cant be understanding!!!
I cant get enough either, i bought a new breast pump cos i thought it was my old one that didnt work properly, they do tend to say you get more when they sleep through most of the night and you are 'full' in the morning feed off one express off the other, but i worry what if there is not enough there for when she comes to feed again??they do say though that it takes 2 hours to re-produce milk dont know how true that is though....its all so confusing!!!!

Hi, if you get engorged at night, why not try to express then and store it in the freezer, you can keep it for 3 months and you should build up a supply.
Your baby has probably changed his feeding pattern cos he is growing, he will need to feed more often. My daughter fed every two hours during the day too for quite a long time, I think that is as normal as your baby is. No two baby's are alike. Sounds like you are doing fine to me. Good luck xxx

Don't worry about feeling more full at night as everybody produces more milk at night. I feed my son who is 7 weeks old at 7 in the morning from one side then express just 1 -2 oz from the 2nd side before offering my son this side. Doing this means that i am always produces just slightly more than my son needs, so i never feel that i am running low. Also it is easy to express once he has fed from one side as i have already "let down". As long as you only express 1 or 2 oz you will have enough to express and feed all day.
