which formula is best to use with a newborn baby

Hi. I have a 2 week old baby and she always seemed hungry the 1st vweek using the newborn formula. So we changed to hungry baby at 8 days and it seemed better for her hunger but now she is passing quite firm stools and when she brings up milk after a while it is thick. Has anyone else had this problem as I dont want her to get constipated due to the formula being too thick. I am thinking of going back to newborn but giving her 180ml with 5 scoops as she is on 120ml with 4 scoops of the hungry baby now.

Sorry don't know much about hungrier baby milk as my son is on Aptamil first milk, but the box says you are supposed to use the correct amount of scoops for formula, as this can make them ill. So for 180ml the box says that you should use 6 sccops, Magda,

HI, when i used to ask my hv about hungry baby milk, they always use to say to me its best to wait until they are 6weeks old(not quite syre why!!) i know others that have done it from 3weeks. I agree with mazm that you should follow the guidelines re the amount of scoops. I can only speak from my experience, this is my 3rd,have changed him to somfort milk, again is quite thick but has settled him down & he takes about 5oz at every feed. I have heard aptimail is a very good milk. Can you ask your hv for advice. Sorry if im not much help!!

hi, my LO was always hungry but my HV advised against hungrier baby milk as it is often linked with constipation... she recommended aptimil as its closest to breastmilk [apparently]... at 3 weeks my LO was drinking 6fl oz bottles every 3 hours... in between feeds offer cooled boiled water...my LO is now 17 weeks & is drinking 9 floz every 3 hours :-)

My friend had the same problem. She was on Cow and Gate 1st but her little one was a hungry baby and didnt seem content but the hungry version made him constipated. The health visitor recommended aptimil as it is the closest to breast milk and not as rich as some of the other formula so easier to digest. She said to give the stage 2(hungry milk) morning and night with the stage 1 inbetween. My friend was worried about using 2 formulas but the hv said as long as it is the same brand its fine as its the same formula just a slighly heavier consistancy. After a couple of days this seemed to do the trick. It also means that you have the option of adding more stage 2 feeds later on if baby gets hungrier when older. You should only make up the milk as per the instructions though with the correct amount of scoops. All of the instructions are very clear that doing it different can make baby ill x

When my little boy was constipated and being sick my doctor told me for example 5 oz bottle instead of 5 scoops use 4 scoops this helped him! sorry i know this wont help you just wanted to say that you need to check with a HV or doctor before changing amount of scoops but i was told to do this x

I have used Aptamil since birth- it is definitely the best formula as is closet to breastmilk and the easiest to digest. I have heard that you shouldn't use hungrier baby for very young ones as their digestive systems not quite ready yet and can get constipated. perhaps best on the first milk but give more/more frequent feeds? You should definitely follow the advice on the carton re number of scoops and water- 6fl oz should be 6 scoops and so on. my LO is 7 weeks now and only drinks 4fl oz at a time so yours must be v hungry!x

i feel very sorry for you with this one. It can be so hard to know what to do best, I think maybe you could try going back to normal formula, but more of it (not more scoops in the same water, but more milk all together), and see if this eases her hunger. As for the constipation, it could maybe be just the change from normal newborn forumla to the hungrier baby, as she is still very young, her digestive system might not be able to properly cope with it (like someone else says i dont think its recommended for use until 6 weeks, but if you have a hungry baby who is always hungry its hard not to!!!), have you spoken to a hv about it? She could be able to put your mind at ease, or give you a good recomendation.

If she was older, I'd say start her with a little baby rice in the evening made up with formula, but 2 weeks is still a little too young for that.

I would speak to your health visitor though, though my personal advice would be come off the hungrier baby for a few weeks, but feed more normal newborn formula, maybe more feeds if these can be fitted in (obviouisly if she is already drinking every 2 hours it would be hard ot add more to that, but you could feed her more at a time). And if she is still hungry, then speak to a hv and tell them! :)
