Both breast and bottlefed babies seem to be equally prone to colic.
You'll recognise colic by lots of crying, screwed up eyes, a flushed face, clenched fists, legs pulled up to the chest and you'll probably be in great demand for lots of cuddles. It's likely to come and go though, with your baby settling down between regular bouts of colic. A baby suffering with colic may be worse during the afternoons and evenings. If you notice this kind of pattern developing, do not despair - there are a number of things you can do to help your baby:
Try different winding techniques, your midwife or health visitor will be able to help with suggestions.
Some traditional ways of dealing with colic include carrying your baby around, rocking, cradling, stroking and swaddling. Hold your baby closely or use a baby carrier or sling.
Continuous white noise such as the tumble drier or vacuum cleaner is also worth trying.
Take your baby out for a walk or get the car seat out and go for a slow drive together. The movement can help settle your baby down.
Give your baby a warm bath or a gentle massage.
Sucking helps to distract your baby from the pain of the colic. Offering a dummy, or even your little finger, may give some relief both to you and your baby.
Ask your midwife or health visitor about medications that you may use, including gripe water, infacol, dentinox and colief.
If you're breastfeeding, try changing your diet, as foods like chocolate (sorry!) caffeine, cows' milk or spicy chilli may make colic worse. Remember whatever you eat, your baby gets first.
If you're bottlefeeding, there are many anti colic bottles and teats on the market. If absolutely nothing helps it may be worth your while talking to your health visitor or GP about changing your baby_s milk. Sometimes trying a low lactose or lactose free formula may help.

hello my daughter also had colic and to be totaly honest i found that nouthing worked for her, i just had to deal with the crying. its not nice but all i found was she liked being cuddled closely. i too tryed loads of medicines and stuff, she soon grew out off it so its not forever, as long as you have people around you who can help and take baby off ya hands when things get a bit much for you then thats all you really need. its just one of those things and you thinkits never gonna end but it does once the stomach gets more mature,
hi my little girl who is 3 months has colic bad we have tried everything too ive just bought colief from the chemist its 10.99 and it seems to be working for her.
Hi, my baby is 3 months now and has been suffering badly with Colic since about
week 4. We use Colief and it works for some feeds and not others, no idea why that
is. It is expensive though at about _10 per bottle - after buying around 10, I found out
you can get it on prescription. My GP didn't offer, I asked outright and she checked
and then agreed.
My son suffered that for about a while, i was told to rub his tummy anti clockwise before his feed and then when winding after a feed rub clockwise on his back, that might also help. good luck x x
hi we gave our daughter colief as the other post said and it was great get a prescripion from ou hv or doc tho coz it is pricy i totally know how you feel but it does seem asthough all of a sudden it stops think it was 12 weeks with our daugter we tried everthing walking along the beach on a night for fresh air she screamed the whiole time it ended up being my mam me and my husband passing her back and forth until she eventually settled but i would definately give the colief a go it settled out little one good luck x
Hi, my son is 6 weeks on sunday(boxing day baby) he suffers quite bad with colic he is on cow&gate comfort,we also use colosynth gransules and infacol,he still clenches his fistsand raises his knees but hes alot better, just wish he would feed more and sleep more!
hi. my daughter is 2 and half wewks old and nothing seems to settle her in the afternoons and evenings, feeding settles her at the time but 5 mins later she screaming again. It lasts for 5 or more hours and nothing we do settles her for long, and as soon as we lay her down, it starts up again. we wondering now if colic but am not sure as we arent really sure what colic is or what causes it. Does this sound like colic?
Zoe, i had exactly the same with baby no.2(have another now)everytime she feed she would be fine, then 10 mins later(after being sick) would be screaming again, nothing worked & like you say this went on for 2 or more hours unitl you start thinking its bottle time again & you start all other again!! After 7 very long weeks, we changed her milk to comfort, used gaviscon, & took her to see a cranial oesteopath. I know babies suffer from wind, but i believe they shouldnt be screaming for hours at a time after every feed, Sometimes it could be something else, i.e reflux. Doctors & hv mainly tell you they will grow out of it by 12 weeks. Which doesnt help you when you are shattered. Obv, infacol, colief also helps. Good luck xxx
My baby also had terrible colic, but nothing ever seemed to work. I remember going back to the doctor for the fiftieth time (it seemed) and she admitted that really, there was nothing anyone could do but wait for them to grow out of it!! I think this is true, although I doubt that's what you want to hear right now. I really feel for you as it is horrible to have to go through, but it really does end- they just grow out of it when they start to be able to sit up etc. The only thing that helped us was dr brown bottles and colief x
