BottlefeedingHow much formula milk should my 8 month old be drinking
Im just wondering how much my boy should be drinking. Also what kind of things can i give him apart from porridge every morning, like when will i be able to try him with like toast and things i could put on toast. If anyone could help me i'd really appriciate it thanks mums x
Hi, from 6-12 months they need around 500-600ml (17-20oz) formula or follow on milk per day, but you can include in that total any that you mix into porridge etc.
They usually say finger foods from about 9 months but I would think you could probably try with toast fingers now, but they don't all take to finger foods straight away, my son is 12 months and have been trying for 3 months now and he just squidges it in his fingers then chucks in on the floor lol
I end up feeding him little bits myself!
I use unsalted butter on my sons toast, you have to be careful with cheese spreads and things as they can be high in salt but a thin scraping would be ok.
As long as you supervise him while he's eating it and never leave him alone with it he should be fine :-))xx
the advice used to be to try finger foods such as toast from 6 months old as chewing helps them with forming words. i personally think that is a tad early given they dont recommend to even start weaning until 6 months! my daughter didnt take to finger foods until she was 10 months old. definitely worth trying him with toast and other soft finger foods now though.
as for other things for breakfast, my daughter loved scrambled egg and baked beans from 6 months old (she used to have it as a lunch too). i used to give her toast with it once she got to about 8 months, but as i say, she wouldnt pick them up and eat them until she was 10 mths, so i just used to cut it up quite small and she'd be fine with it. weetabix is something else you could try giving him (my daughter hated it to begin with though!)
Thank you very much for the advice i really appriciate it because i dont know about you guys but i get told so many different things. so thank you and is that like any kind of beans i could use. My little one is not bad with finger food alothough he get bored of it easy, i give him like Goodies finger food crisps for 7 month + and those biscotti biscuits and he eats the majorily. Thank you again for the advice its been so helpful. If you can think of anything else about like our foods i could try him with id be very greatful. Im just scared of trying him wiv things if im not sure lol if they dont say thats its suitable for babies. Like i have a friend who baby is a week younger from mine and we live in different areas and she went for her 7-9 month check up and they told her that she could use cows milk in her breakfast like porridge and sunny start wheaty biscuits and stuff but i never got told anything like that. Thank you lots :D xx
I think the sunny start wheaty biscuits are just like weetabix, like livi's mummy's little girl my son hated weetabix (still does!!) which is a shame cos he doesn't like his milk and I could have got loads in that!!
This is a good website with info about finger foods and also what foods they still can't have at 8 months
http://www.babyworld.co.uk/information/baby/healthy_eating/eating_6_to_12_months.asp
Although it does say peas and thats the one thing my son continues to gag on even now at 12 months lol :-))xx
My son loved having a bit of my sandwich at that age (fed to him!) mainly cheese but sometimes a bit of ham or tuna, and liked a bit of cheese melted on top of his pasta meals.
Livi's mummy will probably have more info on the food side though as my son wouldn't eat my own homecooked food lol so he was on jars :-))xx
you can use whole cows milk in cooking from 6 months old - but it HAS to be heated, so dont put cows milk cold on cereal. i always used to use formula on cereal for my daughter (not that she'd eat much though!). using cows milk in things like custard, rice pudding, cheese sauces and porridge is absolutely fine as it is obviously heated.
i only ever gave my daughter baked beans, but like buffy says, peas and beans can be a bit tricky. they have shells, and although the shells are soft enough for an older baby, sometimes the younger ones struggle with them. i would just lightly squash baked beans with a fork. if you do the same with peas you'll find that they pop out of their shells and you can pick them out. they didnt bother my daughter, but i know some babies, like buffy says, just refuse peas because of those shells.
after 6 months they can pretty much have anything (dont give honey until 1 yr old though). you could always puree peas, at least that way he is getting them without having to tackle the shells until he is older. as buffy mentioned, i homecooked for my daughter and i'd give her things like tuna pasta bake, roast dinners, macaroni cheese, fish pie, spag bol, fish fingers mash and veg....you name it and she'd eat it!. you just really need to watch out for salt and sugar contents, so using things like jarred (as in one for adults) pasta sauces could contain too much salt, therefore making your own is better. sometimes if i was feeling lazy, i would use the special baby pasta as it is tiny so saved me sitting there cutting up whatever pasta we were having! also, another thing to watch is gravy granules - make sure you only buy reduced salt ones.
I'm having huge problems weaning my nearly 7 month old son and think giving him too much milk 30-32 oz per day...think making him too full up to take food.
winterbabs - yes he is definitely having too much milk. they do still need formula, but after 6 mths old they need to get most of their nutrition from solid food with milk as a top up (milk becomes just a drink after 6mths old and they mustnt fill up on it).
Just reading through the posts, and was wondering can I ask you Livi's mummy why coes milk has to be heated before baby can have it. Only because my HV told me that from 6 months cows milk was fine to use in cooking (including pouring onto cereal), she didn't mention that it HAD to be heated. Just told me that I wasn't to give it as a drink as it doesn't have as much iron as baby needs like the formula does. My son has been having cold cows milk with his sunny starts for the last 2 weeks.....
thank you guys i was confused about milk because i came on this site and went on the mean planner thing were you put the name of your baby and what stage food they are on and it tells you wat u can give them and things but where it say nighttime its says Riley's usual milk but it dint say anything else about a milk feed in the planner so i got confused so thank you very much and thank you for for the website ill have a look at it now :D xx
Hello this is the exact question I want to ask! So 3 bottles a day approx 6-7 oz in them. I weened my boy at 4 months and had no problem. He is 8 months and can hold finger foods suitable for 7+ months and chews well and enjoys a variety of foods. When it comes to food its great to have the advice but you know your child and their capabilities when they are ready they to take the different stages :)
