BottlefeedingBaby suddenly refusing bottle
My 19 week old has gone from having four 9oz bottles a day to only taking 3-5oz out of each bottle and then refusing the rest, he seems ok in himself so don't think he is ill, I don't know what to do as don't want him to starve or lose weight, any ideas please?
Thanks
hi
has he started weaning yet? my daughter was the same tho never got to 9oz bottles.. anyway when i started weaning her alothough she was having baby rice and stuff she still haad 4 to 5 oz.
merry christmas xx
when my eldest started to take less out of each bottle it was a sign that she wanted a bigger gap between her feeds.
i personally wouldnt wean as if he is only taking at most 5oz from 4 bottles then his intake is only 20oz so weaning may drop it even further which below 6mths old is not great at all - baby rice has no nutritional value so weaning wont benefit him in any way if he isnt taking milk.
no he hasn't started weaning yet, we are trying to leave it till 6 months.
He normally goes 3 1/2 - 4 hours between feeds but I'm thinking if I try leave bigger gaps I won't get enough feeds in during the day. He has never had a problem with his weight so I hope he is taking all he needs to keep that up, I will go see the health visitor in the new year if he keeps this up and see what they suggest.
Thanks for your replies, hope you had a good christmas x
if you just demand feed him, you wont go wrong. does he ask for his feeds? if he does then dont worry about the amount he takes. if he hasnt cried and asked for his feed, then dont give it to him and wait until he does ask for it. letting him have a bigger gap at his age will be absolutely fine if that is what he wants to do - you will still get enough in during the day as if he has a bigger gap, he will probably tke more milk in each bottle. when my first baby was that age she'd go 5 hours between her feeds - she'd still have 4 in a day as she'd usually have a tea time feed and her bedtime feed close together.
my second baby is 7 weeks old and goes between 3 1/2 and 4 hours for her feeds and takes 5oz a time. if she wanted to go 5 hours between them, i'd certainly let her even at her age!
also, they have a growth spurt at around 4 months old and for some babies it doesnt result in them feeding more - some actually feed less. honestly dont worry about it, just give him what he wants, when he wants it. do keep an eye on his weight though. he wont starve himself so dont worry about that!
He does get a bit wingey which I assume is him asking for his feed as I have tried everything else like changing his nappy etc. Forgot to mention he does the same with his morning feed which has been about a 12 hour gap from the one the previous evening so I assume it is all he wants. Thanks for the advice, I shall try and go a bit longer and see what he does!
