Baby fights sleeping

Hi, my lo is 8 weeks and the last few days he has been fighting going to sleep all the time. And when he does fall asleep he wakes himself up after about half hour screaming and doesn't want to sleep. As well as this he's rubbing his eyes and making his eyes really red and sore. I swaddle him so he can't rub his eyes but he just screams. We've had about 6 hours sleep in the last 2 days. Anyone got any tips

Thank you from a mum who's tired and a baby who is making himself so upset xx

it sounds like he is getting a bit overtired - when they get overtired they do fight it and then dont stay asleep for very long. are you able yet to recognise his tired signs and therefore pre-empt his need for sleep? my lo (my second baby, 12 weeks old tomorrow) doesnt have long sleeps in the day like my eldest did, she tends to just catnap so i can only gauge when she needs to sleep by how long she has been awake. i know that she can manage 2 hours at most before wanting to go to sleep so after she has been awake for 1 hour and 50 minutes (if she hasnt given me tired signs before this point) then i'll stop playtime, give her a cuddle to wind her down and when her eyes start to look heavy, she goes into her cot with her dummy and is usually ready for sleep then. babies can literally go from being fine, to being tired, to being overtired within minutes and of course the longer the fight, the more tired they get.

oh, and the other thing is that when they have growth spurts it can sometimes upset their sleep as well and make it harder for them to nod off. not a lot you can do if it is a growth spurt other than comfort as much as you can and wait for it to pass
