Toddler fears and phobias

I have a concern with my nearly 3 year old son. He has had a fear of birds for a few months now since a pigeon stole his pancake in town. whenever we go into town now he screams as soon as were anywhere near a bird. He has slept through the night since he was a baby but last night he woke up in the middle of the night screaming, saying "birdies, birdies". I am worried that his fear is turning into a full blown phobia. Has anyone got any advice about how to help conquer his fears?
