Whats going on Braxton hicks or slow labour?

Last night I started getting really bad backache and painful stomach cramps that were coming every 10 to 15 minutes and started at 9pm. I didn't sleep a wink thinking my labour had started and slept in spare room to let hubby have a rest just incase.At 2:30am I took some paracetamol because it was so painful. Then around 3:30am the pains slowed down then stopped since then just had a few braxton hicks. So now I am totally knackered and trying not to be snappy with my toddler. I feel really disappointed and confused as last time I was in labour my waters broke first so there was no denying what was happening.
