Breastfeeding is best for babies and provides many benefits. If you are a breastfeeding mum or mum-to-be who’s planning on breastfeeding, it’s important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet. You should also be aware that combined breast and bottle feeding in the first weeks of life may reduce the supply of your own breastmilk, and reversing the decision not to breastfeed is difficult. The social and financial implications of using an infant milk should be considered. Improper use of an infant milk or inappropriate foods or feeding methods may present a health hazard, so if you decide to use an infant milk be sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions for use carefully. Failure to follow the instructions could make your baby ill.

Because powdered milks are not sterile, failure to follow instructions may make your baby ill.

  • For hygiene reasons, do not store made-up feeds. Make up each feed as required and always discard unfinished feeds after 2 hours.
  • If necessary offer cooled boiled water between feeds.
  • Do not heat in a microwave. Hot spots may occur and cause scalding.
  • Storage – use powder within 4 weeks of opening and store in a cool dry place – do not refrigerate.

  • 1

Wash hands and sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers’ instructions

  • 2

Boil 1 litre of freshly run water. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.

  • 3

Measure the required amount of water (refer to feeding guide) into a sterilised bottle. Do not add powder to boiling water due to risk of scalding.

  • 4

Using the scoop provided, level off the powder with the built-in leveller. Do not press/heap the powder.

  • 5

Add one scoop to every 30ml (1 fl oz) of boiled cooled water. Add the correct number of scoops to the water. Adding too many or too few scoops can be harmful.

  • 6

Replace seal on bottle. Shake well (for 10 seconds) to dissolve powder. Remove seal, replace with a sterilised teat.

  • 7

Cool under running tap. Check temperature of feed. Feed immediately.

Ready-to-feed

Please follow these instructions carefully. Failure to follow instructions may make your baby ill.

  1. Wash hands and sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers’ instructions.
  2. Shake the bottle/carton of Cow & Gate infant milk before opening. Using the feeding guide, pour the required amount of infant milk into a sterilised feeding bottle.

  4. For hygiene reasons, discard unfinished milk in the feeding bottle as soon as possible, and always within 2 hours.
  5. Do not heat in a microwave. Hot spots may occur and cause scalding.
  6. Infants should be supervised at all times when feeding.
